This position is located at the VA Medical Center in Tomah, WI and in the outpatient clinics such as: La Crosse, WI, Owen, WI, Wisconsin Rapids and Wausau, WI in Patient Care Services. The primary purpose of this position is to maintain and/or assemble supplies, operate equipment, and assist treatment team, physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, and other allied health, in performing therapeutic and diagnostic procedures and examinations for patient care.
Duties
Major duties include but not limited to:
Collect, labels and transports patient specimens, including:
Samples via venipuncture
Stool Cultures including providing proper supplies
Throat cultures
Urine specimens (including 24-hour collection)
Other Specimens as needed
Assist with Wound cultures
Performs 12 lead EKG's
Assists with Changes dressings (changes basic dressing with provider oversight)
Provides routine foot care for referred patients under clinical direction of the Podiatrist
Recognizes the need for, and assists with emergency measures, including CPR
Collects patient's data, including vital signs, weight and height and observation of overall condition
Maintains and organizes supply and equipment rooms
Assists with functions (i.e. reception, telephone calls to confirm appointments, receive phone calls, sort and file information, which facilitates patient care and clinic flow
Reports changes in patient conditions to RN/MD or provider including emergencies
Performs other related duties as assigned
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday; 7:30am-4:00pm

Physical Requirements: The work involves long periods of moving about the work unit. The work requires regular and recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching and repositioning patients or similar activities.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
Preferred Experience:
-Specimen collection, including phlebotomy experience
-Lab technician training and/or phlebotomy training
GS-05 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: Examples of specialized experience include (but are not limited to): Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. Knowledge and skill to understand anatomy, health screening and preventive services; knowledge of infection control, aseptic and sterile techniques to prevent patient cross contamination and spread infection; knowledge of verbal and written communication skill.

Applicants may substitute education for the experience required for the GS-05 level. Have you successfully completed a full 4 year course of study leading to a Bachelor's degree, with a major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the Health Technician position
OR
Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-05 level. To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-05. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education.
