This position is organizationally aligned under the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service at the Tomah Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The primary purpose of the position is to provide foot care in development of the foot orthotic and footwear treatment plan, analysis for patients with unusual/complex conditions and to recognize physical abnormalities, deviations, and complicating conditions with potentially life-threating implications.

Duties

Major Duties include but no limited to: Ensuring documentations meets PM&R, Medical Center, and Joint Commission requirements for content and timeliness. Modifies treatment approach and programming to ensure positive outcomes and efficacy of treatment. Communicates and interacts with physicians, allied health professionals, patients, and caregivers in various interdisciplinary clinical settings, rehabilitation medicine, orthopedics, podiatry, etc. Provides assessment of the patient for indications/contra-indications and discussion of the assessment with physician/requesting provider for the purpose of developing the overall treatment plan. Travels to CBOC's and assesses for shoe type, orders and issues those devices. Performs assessment of patients in collaboration with other medical disciplines when appropriate. Promotes competency and enhancement of pedorthic professional practice to contribute to the profession's body of knowledge which includes training of residents/students, continuing education, clinical research, evidence-based studies, promotion of public awareness of the pedorthic profession and other opportunities. Formulate a treatment plan based upon a comprehensive assessment to design an intervention to alleviate limitations an enhance function. Pedorthic treatment may include: Verification of prescription/documentation Analysis of structural and design requirements Development of functional goals Consultation with and/or referral to other healthcare professionals. Implements the pedorthic treatment plan which include but not limited to: Acquisition of anthropometric data Material selection Fabrication of pedorthic devices Diagnostic fitting Pedorthic patient assessment may include but not limited to: Anthropometric data Circulation Skin integrity Range of motion Muscle Posture and balance Utilizes a follow-up treatment plan that ensures successful pedorthics outcomes. This may include but not limited to: Formulation of modifications to ensure successful outcomes Documentation of functional change Reassessment of treatment objectives Evidence based practices Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 7:00am-3:30pm Virtual: This is not a virtual position. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 01/19/2024. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a (GS-08) position you must have served 52 weeks at the (GS-07). The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. Preferred Experience: Certification required. Can be newly certified or have experience. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-07) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: providing support to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, optometrists, nursing assistants, medical aides, and health technicians that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. Additional specialized experience includes: experience of clinical assessments such as gait, range of motion, deformities, lifestyle, etc. Skill to take measurements and casting impressions. Knowledge of foot orthoses and footwear. Knowledge of therapeutic shoe types. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have one and a half years (27 semester hours) of graduate education or internship that is directly related to the work of this position. One year of graduate education is equivalent to 18 semester hours, unless otherwise specified by the school. Part-time education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. Transcripts are required. OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond an equivalent combination of specialized experience and graduate education as described that demonstrates your ability to perform the duties of this position. Your experience must be detailed in your resume, and transcripts required.. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: Work requires movement throughout the Medical Center, to include standing, bending, sitting, reaching, and lifting up to 50 pounds. There exist prolonged periods of working at a computer terminal. Ability to retrieve equipment from a storage room is required. Climbing associated with stocking of equipment and other items in storage areas is necessary. Normal safety precautions are utilized as appropriate for office, Medical Center, and warehouse settings. The work involves moderate discomfort when visiting sites away from the office. At times the employee may be required to wear personal protective equipment (i.e., mask and gown) when visiting work areas with other environmental exposures including wheelchair repair area or Prosthetic and Orthotic Laboratory. Patient transfer, frequent bending and lifting is required.
