About the Position: Serves as an operator in charge of gas or oil fired boiler plants with shift responsibility on a regular recurring basis when supervisor is not present, for all high and low pressure, fire tube and water tube boilers, and auxiliary equipment.

Duties

Maintains high and low pressure, fire tube and water tube boilers and associated equipment to ensure proper operation. Operation of gas or oil-fired boiler plants with shift responsibility. Conducts daily log sheet the steam header pressure, burner fuel pressure on each burner, forced draft and induced draft air pressure an each boiler, main line gas pressure, feedwater temperature, feed water pressure. Records the reading of all gas meters and complete the monthly gas consumption and fuel oil consumption inventory. Relays to the relief operator any problems, malfunctions or any changes to equipment made during the shift. Performs duties in accordance with all safety regulations and guidelines.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must possess a State of Arkansas Boiler license.
  • This position is subject to the Lautenberg Amendment/Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968.
  • This position requires a pre-employment physical to be successfully completed and a successful annual physical thereafter.
  • This position requires a valid state driver's license at the time of appointment.
  • This position requires a government driver's license to be obtained within 30 days of employment and maintained for the duration of employment.
  • This position requires a license in the Arms and Ammunition and Explosives (AAE) program (DA PAM 385-64 and AR-385-64) to be obtained within 6 months of employment.
  • This position is subject to an initial drug screening, and random testing thereafter. A negative drug test result must be received by human resources within 30 calendar days after the Entrance on Duty (i.e., start date).
  • Selectee’s inability to successfully pass or refusal to conduct the drug test may result in the job offer being withdrawn during the recruitment process or subsequently being removed from Federal service for failure to meet a condition of employment.
  • You may be required to sign a Statement of Understanding if you are selected for this position.

The ability to perform common Utility Systems Operator duties. Skilled in starting, operating, adjusting, stopping, maintaining, and performing various operational repairs on single or multiple fuel power boilers and associated auxiliary equipment. Maintaining efficient combustion levels and inspect for operating performance. Working under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal SupervisionAbility to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading)Dexterity and SafetyKnowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc.Operation of Equipment and MachineryTechnical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)Use of Measuring Instruments PHYSICAL EFFORT: Occasionally works in awkward and cramped positions when making minor repairs. Frequent standing, walking and climbing is required when making prescribed checks of all operating plants. Requires heavy lifting of over 50 pounds. WORKING CONDITIONS: Subject to abnormal heat when operating boiler plants. Subject to abnormal cold and bad weather when making prescribed checks in winter. Danger of boiler explosions, high noise levels, toxic fuel and chemical fumes, steam burns and scalding water. May work in dirty, inadequately lighted and ventilated spaces.
