About the Position: Serve as resident expert in protocol development utilizing modern methods of biotechnology, genomics, proteomics, and bioinformatics. Oversee the work of the technical staff. Serve as scientific liaison on collaborative and contract research.

Duties

Responsible for the design and implementation of new test methodologies to support special analytical requirements when there are no standard methods available. Oversee and evaluate novel applications for environmental health assessment, diagnosis of environmental diseases (e.g., arthropod-borne, water-borne pathogens), and Fluorescent Antibody Virus Neutralization (FAVN) testing. Serve as scientific liaison on collaborative and contract research. Lead and manage the design, development, and standardization of genetic based testing methods to detect the presence of pathogenic bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Ensure that all subsequent analytical procedures conform to command policy, accrediting agency requirements, and federal laws.

Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent. OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) developing analytical assays and/or research protocols for the detection of various subjects such as pathogenic bacteria, viruses, or fungi; 2) preparing technical reports in accordance with laboratory accreditation requirements; and 3) following standardized molecular biology techniques and procedures within a laboratory. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
