About the Position: Serves as a Microbiologist in the Environmental Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), Joint Base Lewis-McChord Section of the Public Health Command-Pacific, performing a variety of molecular techniques used in the detection and genomic sequencing of pathogens found within environmental, arthropod, and human samples.

Duties

Reviews reports and worksheets for accuracy, validity, and reproducibility, and prepares narrative report of findings as required. Consults with veterinary and health care personnel on procedures to follow in molecular analysis of a wide variety of environmental samples, investigating arthropod-borne disease containing specimens to satisfy customer testing concerns. Utilizes quality control and quality assurance practices in microbiology, molecular biology, sampling and analysis; and historical as well as modern laboratory practices, procedures, methods and instrumentation.

  • Up to 5% TDY may be required

Education

Basic Requirements

  1. Degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent.

  2. Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
