The: Electrophysiology Nurse Practitioner (NP) is expected to deliver fundamental, knowledge-based care to assigned patients while developing technical skills (VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G6). S/he is a novice nurse with limited experience with the situations in which s/he are ultimately expected to perform. This is the dependent stage of working closely with a preceptor with a goal of developing skills and judgment to utilize the nursing process in real situations.
Duties
The NP's responsibility includes functioning with the scope of practice as outlined below and within the NPs nationally recognized certification, i.e., Adult, Family or Geriatric Nurse Practitioner certification.
The NP will adhere to all current directives of VHA, and meet current Joint Commission standards, and VA-OIG expectations.
The NP will intentionally create opportunities to leverage virtual care technology to support the mission of the facility and VA at large.
Duties but not limited to.
Electrophysiology Clinical Consultation: (consults only from general cardiology or device clinic: atrial fibrillation, supraventricular tachycardia, ventricular tachycardia, antiarrhythmic drug initiation, bradycardia/ppm evaluations ICD implant evaluations, syncope, autonomic dysfunction/POTS.
Dofetilide monitoring clinic (there are 28 patients who are on dofetilide-monitoring labs, ecgs per VA protocols. She will supervise Cardio RN's and have yearly visit with all patients on dofetilide Pharmacy had done this in the past, but they are transitioning to cardio).
Device issues: consult visits to set up pacemaker gen changes @ ERI, BIV upgrades.
Device report help---assist cardiac device RNs with their issues with device reports.
The NP reports directly to Clinical Director of the Specialty Care with the Nurse Executive or designee. Prior to taking issues to the Nurse Executive, the immediate supervisor shall be consulted. The NP is expected to work independently within their scope of practice, according to policies, training, and accepted VA practice.
The NP meets the needs of both the internal and external customers while supporting the mission of the VA by consistently communicating and treating customers (Veterans, their representatives, visitors, and all VA staff) in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner. In addition, s/he provides customers with consistent information according to established policies and procedures and handles conflict and problems constructively and appropriately.
The NP performs population-specific physical, psychological, cultural, and social assessments for adult (18-64), older adult (65-74) and geriatric (over 75) patients/groups.
S/he demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age/population related needs of Veteran patients served in his/her assigned service area. This knowledge includes an understanding of the changes associated with aging and the relevance of this knowledge in developing and implementing a plan of care. S/he must be able to assess and interpret data relating to the patient's current health status, which will facilitate the delivery of care appropriate to the age/population specific needs of the adult and older adult patient. S/he will also demonstrate knowledge of the specific needs of children, as they may be present when care is provided to the adult Veteran.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Education:
Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant. [NOTE: See exception in subparagraph (b) below for candidates who are enrolled in a MSN Bridge Program.]
The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), previously known as the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC)
OR
The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. In these programs, students are given a certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX and should submit this certification to VA prior to appointment. Students do not earn a BSN, but receive a MSN degree upon completion of course work. A copy of the MSN transcript must be provided to VA. Bridge programs that confer a master's degree also fully meet the education requirement, even though a Bachelor's Degree is not awarded.
OR
In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active, and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
Registration: A registered nurse (RN) will have a current, full, active and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the U.S. or in the District of Columbia. The appointing official may waive this registration if the RN is to serve in a country other than the U.S. and the RN has registration in that country (e.g., Philippines). The RN must maintain a current, full, active and unrestricted registration to continue employment with VA.
English Language Proficiency: RNs appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).
Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
Nurse I Level I
An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
Nurse I Level II
An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience;
OR
An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience;
OR
A Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
Nurse I Level III
An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience;
OR
An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience;
OR
A BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience;
OR
A Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
Nurse II
A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience;
OR
ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience;
OR
A Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience;

A Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
Nurse III
Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience;

A Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience
Nurse Practitioners: A nurse practitioner must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a nurse practitioner in a State, possess a master's degree from a program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE, and maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. [The certification must be in the specialty to which the individual is being appointed or selected.
Physical Requirements: This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, and sitting. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing. S/he may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. S/he must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, and able to shift priorities based on patient needs. Applicants must possess the mental and physical ability to satisfactorily perform the duties of the proposed assignment. Physical requirements may involve lifting, carrying, pulling, pushing, reaching above shoulder, walking, standing, sitting, kneeling, and repeated bending. S/he must complete annual Employee Health requirements, such as TB screening or testing on hire, as a condition of employment . In the performance of duties, s/he may be required to drive and/or ride in GSA-vehicles. See Form OF-178 for detailed job specific requirements.
