This position is located in the Central Legal Division of the D.C. Court of Appeals, and works under the supervision of the Staff Counsel.  Incumbent is responsible for handling specific assignments that require both written and oral substantive legal analysis and advice; mentoring and editing the work of junior attorneys; providing oversight and management of specific cases; and, as determined, overseeing statistical data collection. The Deputy assumes duties of Staff Counsel during absences.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:A law degree from an accredited university or college plus five (5) years of legal experience is preferred. Three (3) years of supervisory experience preferably in a court system or legal environment.Must possess an active D.C. Bar membership in good standing, or be eligible to waive into the D.C. Bar. Documentation of education and Bar membership or eligibility must be included with the application. Applications will not be considered complete unless proof is attached. If not a member of the D.C. Bar, waiver into the D.C. Bar within six months after an offer of employment is a condition of employment.   Applicants must enjoy working independently but have the ability to work in a team environment, be internally motivated, enjoy research and writing, possess a love for learning, and be comfortable in a work environment with little public interaction.This position requires strong research and writing skills, the ability to multi-task, and technical expertise in Microsoft Word and legal research software. The incumbent should be an enthusiastic and engaged professional who enjoys working with a diverse group of Court personnel and customers and lives the DC Courts’ values of Accountability, Excellence, Fairness, Integrity, Respect, and Transparency. A legal writing sample that is not a form motion, not to exceed 10 pages, must be attached.Please note that authorization for the release of your adult criminal record revealing any convictions and forfeitures, and any criminal cases currently pending before the courts are required.  If you are selected for the position, a criminal history records check will be conducted.
