This position is located within the Machine Shop of the Facilities Management Service at the VA Medical Center in Hines, IL. The Industrial Equipment Mechanic provides installations, repair, alignment, maintenance, and other mechanical applications of general production and non-production machinery, equipment and hospital systems.

Duties

Major duties and responsibilities include: Dismantling, repairing, relocating, modifying, maintaining, aligning, and installing general production and non-production industrial machinery, hospital equipment, and systems to include: horizontal and vertical conveyors compressor and vacuum pump systems industrial sized food preparation, delivery, and waste disposal systems dishwashing equipment pneumatic tube systems hospital beds, patient lifts and door systems material handling equipment such as forklifts and Prime movers manpowered and powered housekeeping equipment oil, steam, vacuum, low and high pressure control devices sterilizers and autoclaves Minor work assignments may involve repairing and maintaining light to heavy duty construction equipment, lawn care, snow removal, generator, and other motorized equipment Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7am until 3:30pm Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not authorized Critical Skills Incentive (CSI): Not authorized

PHYSICAL EFFORT: The work requires periodic climbing on ladders and scaffolding, sustained standing in one position, lifting, bending and reaching. The employee must be able to work from stages, ladders and from other rigging. He/she will be subjected to fumes and at times other toxic orders and will work around or near patients. Lifting any weight. WORK CONDITIONS: There is recurring exposure to moderate discomforts and unpleasantness, such as, high noise levels, high or low temperatures and adverse weather. The employee will sometimes work in poorly lighted and/or ventilated areas. Hot/cold spots and very cramped conditions also are aspects of the position. The employee must work comfortably at heights that may on occasion exceed 60 feet. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your knowledge, skills and abilities will be compared to the knowledge, skills and abilities (called job elements) needed for success. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). Applicants who appear to meet the screen out element are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated from consideration. The potential eligibles are rated against the remainder of the job elements. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
