Duties

As an Industrial Equipment Mechanic assigned to the machine shop unit, evaluates, repairs, makes adjustments, lubricates, installs and cleans machines, tools and equipment, As a step in performing, preventive maintenance, troubles shooting and diagnoses the conditions of machines and equipment to detect actual or anticipated malfunctions. When problems are determined makes adjustments and repairs to make for the continued operation of the equipment. Much of the equipment has air and electric brakes and both electric and centrifugal clutches. The repair involves various types of bearings on various sizes of shafts. The working with bearing involves the uses of micrometers, presses, a variety of measuring instruments and technical manuals. The work involves air compressors with pistons, rings, shafts and rods. Included in this work is conveyor equipment with chain and gear reduction drives. It involves working with pulleys, couplings, belts, shafts and chains. Major Duties: Must perform preventive maintenance and repairs on various pieces of equipment in the laundry. These include commercial washers, commercial driers, spreader feeders, ironers, folders and steamers. Included are various carts and tables. Hospital windows and screens are included in the equipment repaired, along with various other types of equipment such as wheel chairs, geri chairs, night stands and mechanical carts. Makes repairs on hydraulic equipment. and mechanical power transmissions. Performs maintenance and preventive maintenance on gasoline and diesel power units and associated equipment such emergency power generators and critical pumps. Operates gas and oxygen welding equipment, arc welding equipment, wire welding equipment and associated tools to repair and fabricated i terns used throughout the hospital. Uses vertical milling machine, metal lathe, grinders, power cut · off saws and various hand tools in the same related types of work. Works with steel and aluminum sheets, angles, flats and rounds in various ways in the above mentioned fabrication and repair of shop related assignments. Uses a variety o:f bending, cutting, breaking, rolling and crimping machines to perform operations. Many of these tools and machines are for fabricating specialty items used in various areas of the hospital. Works with weight lifting and exercise equipment used in the KT department and with physical fitness programs. Many times these repairs involve the use of the telephone and manufactures pamphlets in getting information for parts and suggestions for procedures used in making repairs. Has special computer security, computer access and computer knowledge as it pertains to work orders and requests for services and supplies used in the shop. As time dictates fills in for the person with P.D. 3656 and the mechanic shop foreman. Is involved in the maintenance of medical air compressors, vacuum pumps and standard air compressors as they are used in patient therapy in the wood clinic, in the operation of the laundry and in direct patient care on the ward buildings. Your resume must show evidence of, but is not limited to, the ability to determine the types of tools and parts needed to make repairs and or orders them or fabricates them as required; the knowledge to fabricate parts using metal working tools such as milling machines, lathes, welders, power cut-off machines, grinders, drill presses, taps and dies, reamers, machinist scales, micrometers, calipers and various other tools of the trade; the ability to determine if a problem with specific units is electrical or mechanical' and posses superior personal capacity in memory, judgement and ingenuity. Physical Requirements: Works in proximity with operating machinery, moving belts, chains sheaves, gears and shafts. Often works in confined and cramped spaces requiring full alertness and manual dexterity. Incumbent is subject to cuts, burns, and other hazards of the trade and must perform duties in compliance with all safety rules and regulations. Must be able to push, pull, and lift heavy parts and equipment. Working Conditions: Incumbent works in hot, poorly lit, poorly ventilated areas inside specific units. Dusty, dirty, and crowded areas are all hazards of specific job assignments. Works outdoors and indoors in extreme hot and cold.
