Duties
WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING DAY TO DAY
As a Policy Coordinator, you will use your knowledge of and experience with the Immediate Office of the Secretary to optimize business results and customer experience to:
Analyze and evaluate proposed policies concerning critical health and human services issues. Review action and information memoranda for substance, completeness, and proper coordination with the Assistant Secretaries, Operation Divisions, and Staff Divisions concerned with the subject matter before forwarding it to the Secretary or Deputy Secretary and make changes as necessary to reflect Department policies and approaches, as well as interrelationships of programs.
Review complex policy statements submitted by program directors and others throughout the Department to anticipate potential problems or inconsistencies with views of senior management and interested stakeholders and assist in resolving these matters to the satisfaction of senior officials. Coordinate efforts with other agencies and interested parties in the development of Department programs and identify critical areas of agreement and/or disagreement.
Develop background or summary papers to acquaint the Secretary, Deputy Secretary, and Executive Secretary with the substance of issues that come to their attention. Furthermore, prepare recommendations for the Executive Secretary on these issues, that are regularly accepted and adopted by the Secretary.
Attend meetings in which the Secretary, Deputy Secretary, and Executive Secretary participate in relation to health issues, health resources, and services, including meetings with outside groups as well as those with Department officials, for the purpose of recording and following up on Secretarial decisions or requests to assure expeditious implementation.
Records and follows up on Secretarial decisions or requests to provide the Secretary with advice.
Coordinate and attend meetings and briefings to make recommendations in the resolution of policy disagreements, assist in reaching consensus on decisions, and facilitate clearance and approval of important policy documents. Serve as a member to an assigned team in the Office of the Executive Secretary and be responsible for keeping other team members informed as to assigned activities.
Review policy statements to anticipated potential problems or inconsistencies.
Advise senior management on major program policy matters and provide recommendations for effective development of Department processes and strategies in the health services area.

Qualifications
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Minimum Qualifications:
GS-12 Grade Level: You must have one-year specialized experience to perform successfully the duties of the position. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service performing ALL of the following:
Developing guidance to senior management on policies or programs.
Coordinating reviews and analyses of policy issues.
Compiling and summarizing information for the development and/or revision of documents.
GS-13 Grade Level: You must have one-year specialized experience to perform successfully the duties of the position. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service performing at least three (3) of the following:
Developing and presenting guidance to senior management on policies or programs.
Managing, and/or coordinating reviews and analyses of policy issues.
Independently analyzing information for the development and/or revision of documents.
Briefing senior leaders or managers on reference materials (e.g., directives, policy, reports, technical or legislative documents) for discussion in decision meetings.
