The Oklahoma City VA Medical Center is currently recruiting for a Pharmacy Supervisor. The Pharmacy Supervisor, Internal Medicine will serve as a Pharmacy Supervisor and Clinical Pharmacist Practitioner (CPP) in the area of internal medicine. The incumbent will provide supervision to Clinical Pharmacist Practitioners and contribute to patient care through interactions with medical/surgical teams and direct patient interactions.
Duties
Direct and Indirect Patient Care Functions:
(1) Pharmacy Supervisor, Internal Medicine uses expertise in inpatient pharmacotherapy to optimize patient care as an advanced practice practitioner and is authorized within the guidelines of a scope of practice to function as a provider of services to patients admitted to medical/surgical teams in the facility. (2) Interfaces with physicians and other health care professionals in the care of patients admitted to medical/surgical beds. This includes direct assistance for other providers in rational medication selection by providing written and/or verbal consultation.
(3) Under the scope of practice and appropriate physician involvement, designs and monitors therapeutic plans. This includes the choice of medication, dosage, laboratory tests, and therapeutic endpoints. The work is accomplished by gathering all necessary patient-specific information and through the use of accepted clinical practice principles. Each plan should be consistent with policies and guidelines established at the national, VISN, and local levels.
(4) Recognizes adverse drug reactions and makes appropriate changes in therapy.
(5) Is responsible for planning, developing, and maintaining effective clinical pharmacy programs that advocate for rational, cost-effective drug therapy to improve patient outcomes. This occurs in coordination and partnership with appropriate services/initiatives in the OKC VA Health Care System.
(6) Uses dashboards operated through the national, VISN, and local levels to identify patients appropriate for pharmacotherapy service and identify changes in process needed to improve quality of care.
Education and Training Functions:
(1) Assesses and provides for the educational needs of the patient and family to help ensure that pharmaceutical outcome goals are met.
(2) Provides specialized education and training support to other professional services in the broad area of advanced pharmacotherapeutics.
(3) Serves as a clinical resource in the broad area of medication use in patients.
(4) Supervises pharmacy students on assigned rotations, as scheduled.
(5) Supervises pharmacy residents or fellows on clinical rotations and/or other learning experiences.
(6) Designs and supervises implementation of interdisciplinary programs in education, training, and clinical practice with pharmacy, medical, dental, nursing, and research services.
Dispensing:
(1) Evaluates patient medication orders and dispenses appropriate medications and dosage forms, properly labeled after reviewing for completeness, eligibility and appropriateness of drug, dose, route, strength, Updated 5/2022 quantity to be dispensed, reviews for drug incompatibilities, inappropriate combination, potential adverse drug reactions, and dosage ranges.
(2) Provides strict security and accountability of all controlled substances. Conducts accurate perpetual inventories utilizing prescribed record keeping and audit procedures.
(3) Provides quality control for labeling, prepackaging, compounding and dispensing activities of controlled substances by pharmacy service personnel.
Supervisory Functions:
(1) Sets priorities for services in communication with the Associate Chief, Clinical Pharmacy and Education and the appropriate partner services within the medical center.
(2) Provides direct supervision for assigned pharmacy service staff. This includes performance standard creation and assessment, time-and-leave management, labor mapping, competency assessment, training, managing ER/LR concerns, etc.
(3) Supports the credentialing and re-credentialing process for assigned pharmacy staff.
Serves as a liaison for pharmacy service and performs in-service training as scheduled.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency. Pharmacists must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).
Education. Graduate of an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) accredited College
OR
School of Pharmacy with a Baccalaureate degree in Pharmacy (BS Pharmacy)
And/Or
a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree. (NOTE: Prior to 2005 ACPE accredited both baccalaureate and Doctor of Pharmacy terminal degree program. Today the sole degree is Doctor of Pharmacy.)
(2) Graduates of foreign pharmacy degree programs meet the educational requirement if the graduate is able to provide proof of achieving the Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination Commission (FPGEC) Certification, which includes passing the Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Examination (FPGEE) and the Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-Based Test (TOEFL iBT).
Licensure.
Full, current and unrestricted license to practice pharmacy in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia.

GS-13
Experience or Education.
In addition to the basic requirements, candidates must possess 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. At this level, candidates must also demonstrate the following Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
Ability to effectively supervise subordinate staff.
Ability to communicate orally and in writing to persuade and influence clinical and management decisions.
Expert understanding of regulatory and quality standards pertaining to pharmacy.
Skill in managing people or programs.

NOTE: Individuals who have or have had multiple licenses and had any such license revoked for professional misconduct, professional incompetence or substandard care, or who surrendered such license after receiving written notice of potential termination of such license by the State for professional misconduct, professional incompetence, or substandard care, are not eligible for appointment to the position unless such revoked or surrendered license is fully restored (38 U.S.C. § 7402(f)). Effective November 30, 1999, this is a requirement for employment. This requirement does not apply to licensed pharmacists on VA rolls as of that date, provided they maintain continuous appointment and are not disqualified for employment by any subsequent revocations or voluntary surrenders of State license, registration or certification.
