The Legislative Specialist to the Assistant Attorney General (AAG) for OLA, with responsibility for providing advice to the AAG and relevant OLA employees pertaining to Department interests and views on legislation and other congressional activities and develops Department positions on proposed/ pending legislation, hearing testimony, questions for the record of congressional hearings, enrolled bills and other records articulating the Department's views on legislative and congressional matters.

The duties and responsibilities of a Legislative Specialist include but are not limited to the following: Develops, implements, and drafts special reports, including summaries, bill comparisons, and legislative histories, together with appropriate DOJ agencies and staff to ensure proper documentation and concurrences. Conducts a substantive review of correspondence prepared for signature of Assistant Attorney General. Performs searches of the legislative history files in response to Freedom of Information Act requests received by the Office and provides copies of the responsive documents. Reviews, analyzes, and comments on Congressional letters, bill reports, annual reports and oversight responses to the Congress, DOJ regulate. Develops and promotes a records management program for a major multi-functional organization or program at the national level.

Requirements

  • You must be a United States Citizen or National.
  • You will be required to complete a pre-employment security investigation and background check which includes a drug screening.
  • You may be required to complete a one-year probationary or trial period.
  • Selective Service registration is required for males born on, or after, December 31st 1959. Those not registered should have an approved exemption on file.

Qualifications

To qualify for the position of Legislative Specialist, (GS-0301-13), you must meet the basic qualification requirements listed below AND possess the required specialized experience specific to the series and grade you are applying to. Specialized Experience: For the GS 13, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS 12 grade level in the Federal service. At a minimum, specialized experience must be in or related to two of the following: 1) Developing and drafting special reports, including summaries for Congressional hearings; 2) Reviewing, analyzing and responding to Congressional letters, bill reports, annual reports and oversight responses; 3) Developing and promoting a records management program for an organization or program.
