The Clinical Pharmacy Technician must be a highly specialized, efficient, motivated and customer-friendly technician, who, under the authority of the Chief of Pharmacy Service, assists in the management of various clinical pharmacy services at VHSO including daily tracking and reporting of consult timelines, daily tracking and reporting of open encounters and on-going ePAS tracking of health profession trainees as well as misc. duties as assigned.

All duties of the Clinical Pharmacy Technician will be performed under the supervision of assigned CPS. Any clinical decision making will first be reviewed by the CPS. Assigned duties include: Assisting in the timely completion of annual Lost Opportunity Cost (LOC) initiatives. Triaging incoming phone calls from patients, their family members, or other health care providers; communicating with home health agencies to arrange laboratory testing. Completing electronic progress notes and consults, scheduling appointments, ordering laboratory tests, receiving consults and documenting data in Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture (VISTA) and/or Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS). Effective communication with doctors, nurses, pharmacists, patients, and family members, preparing patient correspondence which may include coordinating the order for and receipt of laboratory results from outside the medical center. This may involve communicating with home health agencies to arrange to have laboratory tests drawn. Computer Data Entry Responsible for accurate and timely entry of progress notes and consults into the medical record system. The technician will add the appropriate clinical pharmacist to the progress note as an additional signer. The clinical pharmacy technician may also assist in entry of laboratory orders for CPS. Processes and enters all patient appointments in VISTA then assures that appointment letters are mailed to the patient in a timely manner. Accurately enters encounter information for each patient interaction into the patient medical record using clinical judgment regarding patient specific diagnosis and procedure codes. Performs computerized searches to obtain information from the pharmacy patient data base by using CPRS, VISTA, SQL, FileMan and ProClarity. Incumbent imports search into Excel and other spreadsheets for manipulation. Applies advanced knowledge of computer skills to assist supervisors in monitoring workload by preparing workload and quality reports for the Medication Management Clinic programs as assigned. Education Acts as the education associate for the Pharmacy Service. Assists in coordinating and scheduling education and teaching activities for pharmacists, pharmacy students, pharmacy residents and pharmacy technicians to include arranging teleconferencing capabilities, classroom locations and materials. Activities may include: (a) Obtaining continuing education (CE) credit for educational offerings provided by Pharmacy Service (b) Maintenance of participant records for the educational offerings according to the requirements of the accrediting body (c) The clinical pharmacy technician acts as coordinator for the pharmacy residency programs and Veterans Affairs Learning Opportunities Residency Program (VALOR). Responsibilities may include: maintaining Residency Handbooks, assisting with maintenance of ResiTrak®, coordination of residency / VALOR interview scheduling and application folders, and assisting in recruiting activities. General Assists in the completion of annual Lost Opportunity Cost (LOC) initiatives. Compiles, categorizes, and records workload data for various reports in order to establish a comprehensive record of work performed. Orders supplies for office. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: Pharmacy Technician candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f). Certification: For positions above the full performance level, the employee must pass a national certification exam and hold an active national certification through either: (1) Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT). OR (2) National Healthcareer Association (NHA), Certified Pharmacy Technician (ExCPT). May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: Grade Requirements: GS-07 Requirements Experience: Candidates must possess one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: Knowledge of pharmacy technician principles, practices, concepts and theories providing for sound independent work. Knowledge of the computerized prescription process and input of prescriptions and medication orders or electronic equivalent. Ability to resolve pharmacy/medication issues with other members of the healthcare team, Veterans and external customers. Ability to train developmental pharmacy technicians and students. Ability to dispense medication or sterile products following all regulations, policies and procedures to ensure safe medication distribution. Ability to troubleshoot automated dispensing equipment (ADE) or technology platforms/databases. Note: KSAs must be clearly reflected in your resume under description of duties to be found qualified for this position/grade level. The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-07. Physical Requirements: Physical Demands: Physical aspects associated with work required of this assignment are typical for the occupation, see Duties section for essential job duties of the position. May require standing, lifting, carrying, sitting, stooping, bending, pulling, and pushing. May be required to wear personal protective equipment and undergo annual TB screening or testing as conditions of employment. Work Environment: Work is performed in an office/clinic setting with minimal risks that requires normal safety precautions; the area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. However, the work environment requires someone with the ability to handle several tasks at once in sometimes stressful situations.
