Duties

Assess acute and non-acute clinical problems. Obtain and record a problem-oriented health history. Order and interpret related laboratory and diagnostic tests. Perform a systematic physical examination and interpret abnormal and normal findings to form a diagnosis regarding physical, emotional, or social disabilities. Prescribe medications and initiates emergency care, as appropriate. Conduct interdisciplinary and intradisciplinary collaboration with physicians regarding patient management, to include evaluating and revising therapeutic plans and managing high-risk, unstable, or extremely complex patients. Participate in patient care rounds and conferences, presenting patient cases/topics and communicating patient management strategies to members of the patient care team.

• Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.
• Moderate to heavy lifting up to 50 pounds is required.
• This position may include shift work (evenings, weekends, holidays).
• This position may require the incumbent to work on call during irregular work hours which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or varying work schedules.
• This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations, the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.

Basic Requirements for a Advance Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner): Education: A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. APN Advanced Education: For Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) positions, applicants must possess a graduate or higher level degree in nursing from an accredited educational program in the area of expertise or specialty indicated by the position. Foreign Nursing Schools: An official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools. License/Registration: Applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination and must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of professional nursing experience which includes performing examination and assessments of assigned patients, obtaining and recording health histories of patients, ordering and interpreting laboratory and diagnostic tests for patients, and prescribing a variety of medications to patients. This definition of experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
