About the Position: This position is in the Department of Anesthesia, located at Walter Reed Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. 3 years in the specialty, a minimum of (1) year clinical CRNA experience working independently preferred but not required. Duties

Perform and appropriately document a thorough and comprehensive history and physical examination. Develop a patient-centered plan for analgesia, anesthesia, multimodal pain management and recovery; ensure patient understanding and obtain anesthetic-specific informed consent. Seek appropriate consultation and collaboration with other members of the interdisciplinary health care team, as indicated by patient acuity and procedure complexity. Implement a patient-specific plan of care, which may involve anesthetic techniques such as general, inhalational, regional, local anesthesia, sedation and multimodal pain management. Select, order, prescribe and administer anesthetic medications, including controlled substances, adjuvant drugs, accessory drugs, fluids and blood products. Assessing airway, vital signs (e.g. heart rate, respiratory/ventilation rate, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, temperature, etc.) with appropriate equipment; interpretation and management of abnormal diagnostic data. Ensure accurate documentation and a complete anesthesia record is entered into the health record and finalized. Facilitate emergence and recovery from anesthesia; perform safe patient transport, hand off and transition of care to appropriate members of the recovery team. Conduct and document post anesthesia evaluation; assess, respond and provide appropriate intervention and consultation in the event of any untoward effects of anesthesia or complications. Educate the patient related to recovery, multimodal pain management and patient specific post-operative considerations.

Requirements

• This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations, the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
• This position may require the incumbent to work on any day or shift, including PM or on "on call" basis, necessary to meet mission requirements.
• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
• This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
• This position has specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.
• Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
• This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
• Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.

Basic Requirement for Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Anesthetist): Degree: A graduate or higher level degree from an accredited professional nursing educational program in Anesthesia is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.). Foreign Degree: A degree from a Foreign Nursing School. Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools. Licensure: A current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States; and you must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination (NCE) through the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA). (Note: You must attach a copy of your licensure.). Licensure: A current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse in the specialty of Anesthesia or related specialty from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. (Note: You must attach a copy of your licensure.). Exemption: You are exempt from the basic requirements above if you are a current federal employee occupying a position in the 0610 occupational series and have been continuously employed in this occupational series since September 27, 2017 or before. Applicants claiming this exemption must meet the requirement below. Note: You will be required to provide appropriate documentation to the respective Human Resources Office to validate your status. Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant. Active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Professional Nursing Experience: One or more full years of professional nursing experience which includes administering anesthetics to patients by inhalation, regional, intravenous, local, or topical means; monitoring patients receiving anesthesia care; and providing post-operative care to patients. This definition of professional nursing experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-0610-12). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
