As a Mechanical Experimental Equipment Engineer with NASA Langley Research Center, Engineering Directorate, Aeronautics Systems Engineering Branch, you will serve as a Standard Practice Engineer as defined in NASA LAPD-1700.2 to support the Model Engineering Teams by developing unique research and experimental capabilities for the advancement of aeronautical and space technologies through the development, design and analysis of aerodynamic research models, test hardware, and support equipment.

Duties

Serves as a Standard Practice Engineer. Leads the review and evaluation of wind tunnel test articles that include mechanical, electromechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, or structural equipment and systems for aerospace programs. Analyzes program objectives in terms of specific requirements and the planning, developing, and/or designing of models and tools, articulations, and machinery, e.g., test articles or stands, required to fulfill program objectives. Generates and/or applies theories, principles, concepts, systems, and processes related to: the science of mechanical engineering, design standards, industry codes, and techniques; and advanced mathematics, physical science disciplines. Performs professional engineering work involving the design, development, and documentation of mechanical devices and systems and their equipment and/or components. Works alongside contracting officer’s representative and contracted aerospace and fabrication engineers to incorporate new technologies, improve reliability, and ensure the safety of test articles. Applies engineering and model expertise to reviews of proposed model designs to assure research requirements are met, the model is user friendly, and the model can be used effectively to meet test objectives. Consults with facility and Center Operations Directorate personnel on proposed modifications to facility infrastructure and equipment to assure all constraints, loadings, and impacts are properly quantified and considered. Serves as committee chair for the Wind Tunnel Model Systems Committee (WTMSC). As such, serves as the point-of-contact for desired/ needed revisions to the controlling documents, interfacing with the other NASA centers and Headquarters as required. Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement (in the Education section below), to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements below. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work. NASA utilizes OPM-approved qualification and rating requirements specific for Aerospace Technology (AST) positions which recognizes NASA's unique aerospace work. The specific qualifications and minimum education requirements are further described below and within the education section of the job announcement. To qualify for GS-15, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 level: Applying relevant Model Systems Design Criteria to test article design and/or review, e.g., wind tunnel testing, shock testing, vibration testing, or comparable Designing and developing test articles to meet requirements as established by stakeholders including the development of detailed technical requirements, participating in engineering reviews, coordinating fabrication activities and documenting designs and analysis in written reports Applying knowledge of manufacturing methods and processes to enable the full and proper review of proposed model and facility systems for safety and function Serving as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the function and analysis of model systems, model related facility systems, and prototype/proto-flight systems and hardware Analyzing model design, fabrication, instrumentation, testing, and/or results to advance the state of the art in aero-sciences Your resume must include a clear and detailed narrative description, in your own words, of how you meet the required specialized experience. Education

Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with a major in one of the following:
a) Engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs
b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science or other field of Science
c) Computer Science that included 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of course work in any combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science with at least half of those hours in mathematics and statistics courses that included differential and integral calculus; and that provided an in-depth knowledge of theoretical and practical applications of computer science, including digital computer system architecture and system software organization, the representation and transformation of information structures, and the theoretical models for such representations and transformations.

If you did not complete a qualifying bachelor's degree, you may be eligible if you have obtained a graduate degree in an AST qualifying field, as listed above.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered qualifying for this position.
