Duties
Plans, develops, organizes, manages, evaluates and coordinates the activities of at least one assigned environmental protection program affecting all areas of the installation.
Responsible for complex and varying environmental projects related to their assigned programs that may directly impact the local community.
Determines the funding requirements necessary for accomplishing program and office goals.
Programs include but not limited to asbestos abatement, pollution prevention, environmental compliance oversight, recycling, storage tanks, installation restoration efforts, solid waste management, air quality, water quality, and green procurement.
Develops program goals, develops and implements plans to accomplish these goals, modifies applicable and relevant policies and procedures so as to comply with frequent changes to applicable laws and regulations.
Provides technical advice and assistance to higher supervision, conducts studies to identify problems, prepares and briefs the status of their programs to higher level supervision.
Recommends and pursues modifications to operations or obtains and oversees outside contractors to complete assigned projects.

Qualifications
To qualify for an Environmental Protection Specialist your resume and supporting documentation must support:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular competencies to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To qualify at the GS-12 level, applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level or equivalent under other pay systems in the Federal service, military or private sector. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements including minimum qualifications and any other regulatory requirements by the cut-off/closing date of the announcement. Creditable specialized experience includes:
Manage the funding requirements for an environmental program.
Develop and manage an environmental program such as asbestos, pollution prevention, environmental compliance, etc.
Providing technical advice to management on environmental issues.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Education
Substitution of education may not be used in lieu of specialized experience for this grade level.
