Duties

Servicing and maintenance of vehicles and equipment with diesel engines and hydraulic systems operated in the marine environment. Diagnosing and repairing failures in diesel engines and hydraulic systems operated in the marine environment. Operation of vessels in the ocean and estuaries as part of coastal research activities. This includes operation of LARC V and Coastal Research Amphibious Buggy (CRAB). Deployment and recovery of oceanographic instrumentation. Operation of equipment such as all-terrain forklifts, backhoes, and ATVs. Fabrication of specialized subsea equipment mounts using metal working and welding skills. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 10% of the time.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.

Qualifications

DHA for Certain Competitive Service Positions Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes, maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing problems with diesel engines, experience maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing problems with hydraulic systems. Formal training and certifications are a plus, experience with deployment and recovery of oceanographic instrumentation in coastal environments, experience working on an oceanographic research vessel or commercial vessel, experience with rigging and marine operations, and maintaining and repairing small engines and outboard motors. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). OR Education: One and a half years of college graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total semester hours minus 18) by 9. Add the two percentages. Must Submit Transcripts.

Time in Grade Requirement for GS-08: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-07).
