About the Position: This position falls under the Defense Health Agency-Tidewater Market at the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, performing a variety of technical support functions in an inpatient pharmacy, including operation and care of varied pharmaceutical equipment, processing medication orders using computerized order entry as a representative of the pharmacy, and often independently answering inquiries from doctors, nurses, patients and staff. This is a Direct Hire Solicitation

Duties

Perform a variety of complex technical functions to interpret, order, receive, store, and dispense pharmaceuticals. Process medication orders by using computerized order entry. Prepare, store, and issue sterile and non-sterile drug preparations following established guidelines. Experience with appropriate storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous drugs and waste. Applying pharmaceutical nomenclature, formulas, strengths and dosage forms of drugs. Experience using systems of weights and measures. Experience in the operation and care of a variety of pharmaceutical equipment, receipt, storage and order of pharmaceuticals. Experience in a wide variety of procedures in repacking pharmaceuticals, bulk compounding, preparation of sterile solutions, and setting up medications for final check by Pharmacist.

Requirements

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
• This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to applicant testing and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
• This position requires a pre-employment physical.
• In accordance w/BUMEDINST 6230.l 5B, susceptible/occupationally exposed employees w/direct contact w/patients will receive immunization against communicable diseases unless a current immunization, protective titer, or medical exemption documented.
• This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations.
• This position may be required to work on any day or shift, including night, weekends, holidays or an "on call" basis, necessary to meet mission requirements.
• This position is designated "Mission Essential." In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situation (natural or man-made) the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission.
• Licensed Pharmacy Technician required.
• Incumbent must hold and maintain a current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS)Certification that is sponsored/endorsed by the American Red Cross. Current Advance Life Support or other advanced certification does not supersede BLS completion.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: One year of specialized experience which includes, verifying accuracy of pharmaceutical labels for filling and administering pharmaceuticals; utilizing automated pharmacy systems to enter and retrieve data; and rotating pharmacy stock. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05). OR EDUCATION: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Pharmacology. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages.
