This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

The incumbent is a professional social worker assigned to Inpatient Acute Care Medical/Surgical and ICU units and must demonstrate the following skills:
-Ability to independently conduct admission assessments to determine needs of Veterans and family members. Participates as an active member in the treatment planning process with other disciplines and ensures that discharge plans are executed in a manner that is timely and appropriate.
-Incumbent has the ability to establish and maintain effective therapeutic relationships with Veterans and their families. Incumbent can independently work with patients and families who are experiencing a variety of psychiatric, medical, and social problems utilizing advanced level case management interventions, individual, group and family counseling and therapy skills.
-The incumbent must be knowledgeable regarding the processes relevant to psychiatric commitments and legal guardianships, and procedures to address Veterans who lack capacity to make medical decisions.
-Based upon the incumbent's assigned caseload and associated lengths of stay with highly complex and highly visible cases, this will allow the incumbent to utilize 25% of his/her time as the primary consultant for routine and complex case discussions for the inpatient social work staff and stakeholders. This will also include providing direction, coaching, and education.
-Independently provides consultation service to other staff and peers providing services to Veterans hospitalized greater than 30 days. The incumbent will provide direct psychosocial and discharge planning services to these Veterans.
-Incumbent will at a minimum complete the Yellow Belt Certification within 9 months. This will allow for identification of Service improvement and application of Lean Six Sigma tools.
-Incumbent will track complex discharges, reporting on trends to determine areas for practice improvement with social work intervention. Develops and implements systems to track characteristics of patient stays leading to high resource utilization or suboptimal outcomes to facilitate continuous quality improvement activity.
-The Incumbent will provide quarterly training for the inpatient medical/surgical social work staff on relevant topics pertaining to their specific population and/or program.
-The incumbent assesses high risk factors, acuity, and the need for services. The incumbent completes the C-SSRS, Comprehensive Suicide Risk Assessment, Suicide Behavior Overdose Report, and Suicide Prevention Safety Plan as per national and local policy. All documentation with use of appropriate template(s) is to be placed in CPRS on all patients with suicidal ideation and on any patient whose record is flagged "High Risk for Suicide."
-The incumbent has advanced knowledge of and mastery of theories and modalities used in the specialized treatment of complex physical or mental illnesses. The incumbent will have the ability to provide coaching to new/graduate student social workers and to serve as a field instructor for social work graduate students who are completing VHA field placements.
-The incumbent must maintain knowledge of Veteran's benefits and services, community resources, and process for making appropriate referrals to community and other governmental programs or agencies.
-The incumbent has the ability to provide consultation/education to Veterans and families Advance Directives. The incumbent will address Advance Directives and Organ Donation in accordance with the standards of their work area.
-The incumbent will provide consultation/education to medical residents on social work practice and VA policy and procedure. The incumbent will provide wellness/prevention education and will refer Veterans/families to the appropriate interdisciplinary team member for identified health education needs.
-The incumbent will participate in committee assignments, as deemed necessary by the Supervisory Social Worker.
-The incumbent provides orientation, coaching and guidance to entry level staff and Social Work graduate students. Is active in and accepts responsibility for the development and maintenance of professional standards of treatment.
-Incumbent must have knowledge of the signs and symptoms of abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
-Incumbent has the ability to establish and maintain effective interactions and working relationships with clients, staff, and representatives of community agencies.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30a.m. to 4:00p.m. or 8:00a.m. to 4:30p.m.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Education. Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work. Verification of the degree can be made by going to http://www.cswe.org/Accreditation to verify that the social work degree meets the accreditation standards for a masters of social work.
Licensure. Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-0185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level. Current state requirements may be found by going to http://vaww.va.gov/ OHRM/T38Hybrid/.

English Language Proficiency. Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f).

Grade Determinations:
Social Worker (Program Coordinator), GS-12
Experience and Education. One year of experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level. Experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills and judgment, demonstrating progressively more professional competency. Candidate may have certification or other post master's degree training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship, or equivalent supervised professional experience.
Licensure/Certification. Individuals assigned as social worker program coordinator must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level, and must be able to provide supervision for licensure.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs:
(a) Knowledge of program coordination and administration which includes consultation, negotiation, and monitoring.
(b) Knowledge and ability to write policies, procedures, and/or practice guidelines for the program.
(c) Ability to supervise multidisciplinary staff assigned to the program.
(d) Skill in organizing work, setting priorities, meeting multiple deadlines, and evaluating assigned program area(s).
(e) Ability to provide training, orientation, and guidance within clinical practice.
Preferred Experience:
