This position is located in the Fort Thompson Service Unit, Behavioral Health Department, Fort Thompson, South Dakota. The Traditional Healer/Coordinator coordinates activities to sustain our patients'/clients' cultural beliefs and values by providing traditional patient counseling and healing, cultural education, consultant and resource services to the Fort Thompson Service Unit (FTSU) patients, staff, and communities.

Duties

Plan, manage and carry out service unit traditional counseling/healing services in accordance with departmental goals in order to meet defined objectives. Provide traditional counseling/healing services to patients and their families in clinical and community settings, including the bedside, exam room, sweat lodge, and community sites, as appropriate. Provide traditional counseling on disease process, health maintenance, the promotion of healthy lifestyles and the prevention of illness while listening and supporting the patients' current concerns. Sustains patients'/clients' cultural beliefs and values and enable FTSU staff to provide services with cultural sensitivity and competence. Provide training on native medicine, food, and culture for service unit staff and assists with staff development activities. Manage the SU ritual therapeutic sweat services and maintain the traditional sweat lodge facilities. Participate on service unit committees as assigned.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): Degree: behavioral or social science; or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR Combination of education and experience that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. OR Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: GS-9: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-7 OR 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree Examples of specialized experience: GS-9: Provide traditional healing, cultural education and counseling to patients, develop treatment plans, coordinate care with health care staff, manage traditional healing and counseling services. Specialized Experience: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. NOTE: Education and experience may be combined for all grade levels for which both education and experience are acceptable. Time In Grade (Merit Promotion Candidates Only) Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
