Click on "Learn more about this agency" button below for IMPORTANT additional information. The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a Recreation Assistant over one of the fitness centers. To assist the Fitness and Sports Manager in providing comprehensive health and fitness evaluations to the local population with the goal of centralizing and standardizing fitness testing requirements and fitness improvement programs.

Duties

Serve as recreation assistant and maintain order and enforce policies, procedures, and safety rules for fitness center. Receive, store, and issue towels and a variety of recreational supplies and equipment. Ensures that issue slips are properly completed on all equipment issues. Assist in physical conditioning programs by demonstrating, tracking equipment, methods and procedures to be used, as well as proper safety techniques. Perform basic physical assessment measurements to include height, weight, timed walk/run test, and muscular strength tests. Set up and takes down equipment for sport programs and/or special events.

  • Require annual Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation/Basic Life Support/Automated External Defibrillator (CPR/BLS/AED) Certification.
  • Must complete all mandatory training IAW appropriate regulations, and maintain certification in standard first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
  • Measurement for height, weight and body composition will be taken in a private room or in a partitioned area away from the general flow of customers using a tape measure.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Group Standard for Technical and Medical Support Positions. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-04, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes performing work as a group leader, counselor, or similar work in public and private recreation programs for adults or children such as summer camps, local playgrounds, YWCA and YMCA clubs, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, urban community centers, or resort recreational activities; teacher's aid in elementary school recreation or physical education program, with emphasis on development of general recreational skills and abilities; aid or assistant assignments in recreation while on active military service; aid or assistant in the organization and administration of recreation activities, such as preparing activities calendars, maintaining attendance records, and providing information concerning schedules and activities; summer aid in a State or national park, with duties related to the recreational activities of visitors to campsites, trails, picnic areas, nature and raft centers, and boating and fishing areas (e.g., demonstrating camping techniques and park safety, conducting nature tours, and overseeing farm animal areas provided for children), sales or stock clerk in a recreation supplies and equipment shop; aid or assistant in the issuance of authorized property, and in the maintenance of inventory control and accountability for such property in a recreation facility; or aid or assistant in a hotel or resort recreation service, with duties such as setting up areas for games, tournaments, and other organized group recreational activities. OR EDUCATION: Successful completion of a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in courses related to recreation or physical education. OR COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position if the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100 percent. To combine education and experience, determine the total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level. Then determine the education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level. Finally, add the two percentages. Knowledge of a standardized body of rules, procedures and operations related to one or more indoor/outdoor recreation functions in order to perform the required activities in a fitness and sports environment. 2. Knowledge of general office administrative and clerical procedures, and automation functions to support office operations such as answer telephone, maintain files/office forms, order supplies, operate a cash register, enter and retrieve data from a computer. A qualified typist is not required. 3. Ability to follow written and oral instructions, and communicate effectively orally and in writing with a diverse group of individuals, using a high degree of tact and diplomacy. 4. Knowledge of a full range of work processing functions and the ability to work independently with little need for direct supervision in completing the assignments involving a sequence of tasks or processes. 5. Knowledge of established safety standards and procedures. 6. Knowledge of fitness equipment set up, adjustment, and operating procedures. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Work varies from office setting to outdoor environment as mission and operational tempo dictates. Walking, standing, bending, and carrying light equipment is necessary to complete assigned tasks to meet mission goals. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work involves everyday risks or discomforts associated with offices, meeting, training rooms, and high motor vehicle traffic areas. Work areas are adequately heated, lighted, and ventilated. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
