The Assistant Nurse Manager works in a leadership role on complex nursing units. This position requires the dedication and commitment of an experienced RN to function in a leadership role, to include but not limited to schedule, mentor and supervisor nursing staff members as well as to facilitate patient flow and positive patient outcomes. Excellent interpersonal skills with strong communication skills are required with recent leadership experience.
Duties
The Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) is a registered professional nurse responsible for assessment, planning, provision and evaluation of nursing services in specified area(s).
Major Duties
Directs and organizes patient flow in assigned area
Maintains unit schedule
Grants leave for staff
Coordinates the provision of care
Assists staff to fulfill performance expectations
Leads interdisciplinary problem solving at the area and /or program level
Mentors less experienced nurses , other RNs in expanded roles, and/or students
Ensures that, within the scope of duties, confidential information is at all times safeguarded.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday days with rotation to evenings and nights to meet the needs.
Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Preferred Experience: Master's Degree in Nursing strongly preferred.
Bachelors in nursing or related field, or actively enrolled in an accredited BSN program required.
Certification in area of assignment preferred and approved by Nurse Professional Standards Boards.
A minimum of five (5) years of successful nursing clinical practice, with at least one (1) year of recent nursing management experience in an inpatient Medical/Surgical Unit in a complex, affiliated, tertiary facility highly preferred.
Demonstrated skills in effectively managing human resources in previous assignments.
Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated team building and problem-solving skills.
Experience in coordinating the daily flow of patient care
Demonstrated skills in effectively collaborating with and directing multidisciplinary teams in previous assignments.
Advanced knowledge of computer systems and standard software programs required.
Knowledge and understanding of Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) regulations/ policies/procedures, current Joint Commission standards for Ambulatory Care, and other current internal and external accrediting body standards.
Evidence of previous active leadership in system redesign initiatives to facilitate Orlando's transition to a more tertiary care delivery model.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a team member and leader, with excellent interpersonal skills, strong organizational skills, and excellent oral communication and writing skills, as demonstrated in previous assignments.
Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree.

Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires long periods of continued standing (1-3 hours), stooping, sitting, bending; pulling and pushing up to 50 lbs. Ability to wear protective attire (lead aprons and eye ware). Transferring patients and objects may be required. Mechanical inpatient lifts are provided.
