This position is located in the Prosthetic-Orthotic Laboratory, within the Prosthetic & Sensory Aids Department, at the Caribbean Health Care. The personnel design, fabricate, repair, modify and fit a wide range of custom, non-custom prosthetic-orthotic devices prescribed by physicians.
Duties
Major Duties:
Under the guidance of the prosthetist/orthotist, fits clients with devices prescribed by physicians.
Measure, design fabricate and fits orthoses and prosthesis and repairs appliances, such as corsets, belts, trusses, orthopedic shoes, or simple braces for cases which require standard techniques.
Responsible for assisting in the assembly of components for custom orthotic/prosthetic devices.
Orders and maintains an inventory of prefabricated prosthetic and orthotics devices.
Serve as a technical advisor to physicians, nurses, therapist and other staff members in the use and application of appliances.
Use skills to custom design and manufacture devices and make custom shoes modifications as needed to ensure proper compliance of application of prescription.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30 A.M. - 4:00 P.M.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 01/04/2024.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-6 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-5. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.

Specialized Experience: Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled.
You may qualify based on your experience as described below:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-5 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: fitting clients with devices prescribed by physicians; ordering and maintaining an inventory of prefabricated prosthetic and orthotic devices; modifying required devices for custom fit and function; measuring, fabricating and fitting patients with orthotic devices.

Physical Requirements: Duties require extensive periods of standing and walking. Duties require regular and recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, pushing, reaching, carrying supplies and similar activities. Duties require incumbent to be able to lift. Occasionally it may be necessary to lift supplies and objects weighing as much as 50 pounds. Requires use of proper body mechanics. Incumbent must be able to work in stressful situations. The Lab is busy with patients, phones ringing and sometimes very irate patients who need to be subdued.
