This position is located in the Prosthetic-Orthotic Laboratory of the Outpatient Clinic in Ponce, PR.
Duties

Measuring, designing, fabricating, and fitting orthoses and prosthesis;
Repairing appliances such as corsets, belts, trusses, orthopedic shoes, or braces;
Interpreting physician prescriptions;
Assembling components for custom orthotic/prosthetic devices;
Ordering and maintaining an inventory of prefabricated prosthetic and orthotic devices to meet the anticipated needs of patients and respond with minimum delay to prescriptions/requests;
Designing, manufacturing, and modifying custom devices to ensure proper compliance with prescriptions;
Preparing molds and arch supports to ensure proper fit and function;
Performing precision adjustments and alignments as needed;
Determining the most appropriate device based on the Veteran's disability, age, activity level, and living circumstance;
Performing related duties as required.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:30am - 4:00pm.

Qualifications
LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: Candidates must be fully bilingual in English and Spanish, which includes verbal and written communication. ~AND~
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS GS-06: One year of specialized experience that required an application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of this position. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level in Federal service. Specialized experience includes: receiving and interpreting prosthetic requests and prescriptions; designing, fabricating, repairing, modifying, and fitting prosthetic/orthotic devices; counseling patients, family members, and caregivers on the use and care of prosthetic/orthotic devices; and using a computer to access medical records, order materials/supplies, and communicate with providers/patients. This experience must be detailed in your resume to receive credit. ~OR~
One half year of graduate education (9 semester hours*) that is directly related to the work of this position. *One full year of graduate education is the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one year of study, if that information cannot be obtained from the transcripts, 18 semester hours is considered as satisfying one year of full-time study. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study. Transcripts required. ~OR~

Physical Requirements: The work of this position involves extensive periods of standing and walking, and regular and recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, pushing, reaching, and carrying of supplies. The employee must be able to lift supplies and objects weighing as much as 50 pounds using proper body mechanics. The Health Technician must be able to work in stressful situations in a laboratory that is very busy with phones ringing and patients who can sometimes be irate and require attention. The work involves moderate risks or discomforts that require special safety precautions. The employee works around machinery and irritant chemicals and is exposed to patients who may be contagious. The Health Technician is required to utilize standard precautions and personal protective equipment as needed.
