You will serve as a METEOROLOGIST/OCEANOGRAPHER/PHYSICAL SCIENTIST in the Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center, Regional Atmospheric Modeling Division, Modeling & Forecasting Department of FLT NUMER OCEANGPHY METEO CTR. This announcement uses the Certain Personnel of the DoD direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

Duties

You will integrate, validate, maintain, and improve regional environmental numerical modeling systems that integrate atmosphere, ocean, and wave data using skills and experience in computer programming, data analysis, and environmental science. You will utilize common software configuration management tools (e.g. GitHub, subversion) to document modeling changes to ensure that they are transparent, reversible, and replicable. You will work in a Linux computational environment to integrate, port, maintain and adapt new and/or updated environmental models and applications on a variety of computer systems. You will maintain close communications with research and development partners for assigned tasks. You will respond to inquiries from Navy stakeholders regarding environmental numerical modeling services.

Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION: 1301: 1.Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics OR 2.Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education. 1340: Degree: meteorology, atmospheric science, or other natural science major that included: At least 24 semester (36 quarter) hours of credit in meteorology/atmospheric science including a minimum of: Six semester hours of atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics;* Six semester hours of analysis and prediction of weather systems (synoptic/mesoscale); Three semester hours of physical meteorology; and Two semester hours of remote sensing of the atmosphere and/or instrumentation. Six semester hours of physics, with at least one course that includes laboratory sessions.* Three semester hours of ordinary differential equations.* At least nine semester hours of course work appropriate for a physical science major in any combination of three or more of the following: physical hydrology, statistics, chemistry, physical oceanography, physical climatology, radiative transfer, aeronomy, advanced thermodynamics, advanced electricity and magnetism, light and optics, and computer science. 1360: 1. Degree: major study of at least 24 semester hours in oceanography or a related discipline such as physics, meteorology, geophysics, mathematics, chemistry, engineering, geology, or biology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of oceanography, physics, geophysics, chemistry, mathematics, meteorology, computer science, and engineering sciences. OR 2. Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. EXPERIENCE: GS-12: In addition to the Basic Education Requirements, Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience performing theoretical meteorology and/or oceanography, including the dynamics of atmosphere/ocean, mesoscale processes, and application of computer methods of numerical mesoscale forecast analysis and prediction; Experience applying theories, methods, and techniques of professional meteorology and/or oceanography sufficient to improve forecast guidance; Experience performing conventional meteorological and/or oceanographic (METOC) in situ observing platforms and algorithms used to produce environmental estimates and derived METOC products; Experience operating METOC satellites, their sensors, the algorithms used to produce environmental estimates, and the METOC products derived from satellite data; Experience in public speaking and technical writing; and Experience in environmental processes relevant to military missions GS-11: In addition to the Basic Education Requirements, Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience practicing statistical methods and standard techniques for post-processing and evaluating atmospheric, oceanographic, and/or wave model numerical analysis and forecast products; Experience applying air-sea interaction theory; Experience utilizing advanced programming language such as FORTRAN, C, PERL, or Python, an advanced operating system such as UNIX or LINUX, software configuration management, and visualization of large scientific data sets; Experience utilizing software engineering techniques as applied to the development and maintenance of automated, real-time systems; Experience in public speaking and technical writing; and Experience in environmental processes relevant to military missions.
