Duties
Assist in conducting surveys to identify and evaluate potential health hazards.
Perform sampling using standard methods to determine nature and degree of hazard for a variety of materials and environments.
Consult with other occupational health personnel on industrial hygiene matters.
Determine measurements to be made and methods to use; calibrates and uses industrial hygiene equipment.
Perform analysis using standard methods to determine nature and degree of toxic material present in a variety of materials, such as environmental samples, and industrial products.
Work under supervision of a Supervisory Industrial Hygienist. Assignments are given in terms of objectives, priorities, and deadlines by the Supervisor and/or senior Industrial Hygienist.
Requirements
- Tier 3: This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
- Incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
- Pre-employment and annual physical is required.
- Work involves lifting and carrying loads sometimes in excess of 25 pounds as well as extended standing, sitting, and bending.
- Exposure is possible to both US Army unique and industrial dangerous type chemicals and gases, excessively hot or cold temperatures, and high voltages.
- Incumbent must be able to wear protective equipment and clothing for extended periods.
- The duties of this position require Temporary Duty (TDY) travel. Incumbent participates in field studies and investigations, which may require absence from the home duty station for periods of 5 to 21 days during each field trip.
- Incumbent must possess and maintain a valid State issued driver's license.

Basic Requirement for a Industrial Hygiene Technician:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience performing inspections to control or eliminate hazardous environmental conditions and potential health hazards in the workplace, calibrating and using industrial hygiene sampling instrumentation, and selecting appropriate sampling equipment and techniques to determine the nature and degree of hazards. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).

Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or L in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Environmental Science, or related fields such as Engineering, Industrial Hygiene or Health & Safety.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total semester hours minus 18) by 9. Add the two percentages.
