This position is in the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Field Organization, Pacific West Area (PWA), Western Human Nutrition Research Center located in Davis, California.
In this position, you will support basic and applied research on human energy expenditure, body composition, performance and the effects of nutritional status upon these functions.
This is a term, time-limited appointment with an initial duration no less than 13 months and can be extended up to a total of 10 years.
Duties
Serves as part of a research team assisting with basic and applied research in the physiology and biochemistry of energy balance.
Schedules and prepares human volunteers for specific metabolic, body composition of physiologic procedures, explains and demonstrates the various tests and provides encouragement during testing.
Collects test result data, performs statistical analysis, interprets research results, and prepares routine reports for presentation or publication of research findings.
Calibrates the instruments in accordance with established procedures prior to and during testing and assists in the maintenance of instruments and appropriate supplies.
monitors the subjects to ensure data obtained are reliable and accurate.
Reviews scientific literature in energy metabolism, bone density, body composition and related fields to maintain awareness of recent developments and incorporates the information into the physiology laboratory's methods and procedures.
Requirements

Qualifications
Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.
Basic Requirements for Physiologist, 0413 Series:
Degree: in one of the basic animal sciences or physiology; or a related discipline or field of science that included at least 24 semester hours in the basic animal sciences, of which 10 semester hours were in animal physiology.
Evaluation of Education: Courses such as anatomy; cytology; invertebrate and vertebrate zoology; embryology; entomology; animal, dairy, and poultry husbandry; nutrition; genetics; and physiology may be used to meet the 24-semester-hour requirement in the basic animal sciences.
Courses in physiology, animal or human physiology, cellular physiology, or courses that were well oriented toward animal or human physiology, e.g., some advanced courses in biochemistry, are qualifying as animal physiology courses. Courses in related fields such as cytology and microbiology (including microbial physiology) may also be qualifying, provided the course work dealt directly with the application of scientific principles underlying animal physiology, or with the methodology and techniques applied in animal physiology work.
Basic Requirements for Nutritionist, 0630 Series:
Degree: Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in the fields of dietetics, food, nutrition, food service management, institution management, or related science. The educational program must have been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics(external link) (ACEND), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. For dietitian positions, the curriculum must have been in accordance with the qualifying requirements established by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND)(external link) (formerly American Dietetic Association(external link) (ADA) prior to January 1, 2012) in effect at the time of graduation.
OR
Completion of a coordinated undergraduate program, internship, or other clinical component approved by AND (formerly ADA) for dietitians or nutritionists.
OR
Professional registration as a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN).
Applicants who have completed a coordinated undergraduate program, internship, or other clinical component approved by AND (formerly ADA) for dietitians or nutritionists; or applicants who possess professional registration as a Registered Dietitian or Registered Dietician Nutritionist meet the requirement for GS-7.
Employees currently assigned to positions in this occupational series as of September 2017 will be considered to have met the basic requirements for the position occupied.

In addition to meeting the basic requirements described above, applicants must also meet additional qualification requirements as stated below.
GS-07:
Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-07 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-05 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience assisting with research in human physiology using indirect calorimetry; operating basic laboratory equipment or instruments to measure body composition; and recording and evaluating scientific data.
OR
Education: Successful completion of one (1) full year of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree. Related degrees may include physiology, biochemistry, biophysics, molecular biology, biology, biomedical sciences, or anatomy.
OR
Superior Academic Achievement (SAA): Completion of a bachelor's degree, with Superior Academic Achievement (S.A.A.). Superior Academic Achievement must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled, as described above. S.A.A. is based on (1) A grade point average of B (a GPA of 3.0 or higher) for all completed undergraduate courses, or those completed in the last 2 full years of undergraduate study; OR (2) A grade point average of B (a GPA of 3.5 or higher) for all courses in your major field of study, or those courses in your major completed in the last two years of undergraduate study; OR (3) Rank in the upper one-third of your class in the college, university, or major subdivision; OR (4) Membership in a national honor society (other than freshman honor societies) recognized by the Association of College Honor Societies.

A combination of specialized experience and education as described above.
GS-09:
Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-09 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-07 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience conducting research in physiology to measure metabolism and physical fitness; using indirect calorimetry in humans; interpreting research results of scientific data; using wearable technology to measure physiology in humans; and operating specialized laboratory equipment or instruments to measure body composition in humans.
OR
Education: Successful completion of two (2) full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree. Related degrees may include physiology, biochemistry, biophysics, molecular biology, biology, biomedical sciences, or anatomy.
OR
A combination of specialized experience and education as described above.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
