This position is located with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Pacific West Area (PWA), Western Human Nutrition Research Center (WHNRC), in Davis, CA. The incumbent will perform a variety of physiology-related research techniques supporting human nutrition research studies.
THIS IS A TERM, TIME LIMITED APPOINTMENT WITH AN INITIAL DURATION OF NO LESS THAN 13 MONTHS AND CAN BE EXTENDED UP TO A TOTAL OF 10 YEARS.
Duties
Conducts graded exercise tests, stress tests and cardiorespiratory endurance tests.
Measures energy expenditure of human volunteers using respiratory gas exchange, heart rate monitoring and stable isotope dilution techniques.
Perform reduction and statistical analyses utilizing computers to develop reports on tests.
Monitor test subjects to ensure that human tests are performed safely by using and interpreting electrocardiographs, blood pressure, heart rate and visual observation for fatigue.
Prepares human volunteers for specific metabolic, body composition of physiologic procedures, and explains and demonstrates the various tests.

Qualifications
Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.
All applicants must meet the basic requirement(s) identified below.
BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT GS-0413
Degree: in one of the basic animal sciences or physiology; or a related discipline or field of science that included at least 24 semester hours in the basic animal sciences, of which 10 semester hours were in animal physiology.
Courses such as anatomy; cytology; invertebrate and vertebrate zoology; embryology; entomology; animal, dairy, and poultry husbandry; nutrition; genetics; and physiology may be used to meet the 24-semester-hour requirement in the basic animal sciences. Courses in physiology, animal or human physiology, cellular physiology, or courses that were well oriented toward animal or human physiology, e.g., some advanced courses in biochemistry, are qualifying as animal physiology courses. Courses in related fields such as cytology and microbiology (including microbial physiology) may also be qualifying, provided the course work dealt directly with the application of scientific principles underlying animal physiology, or with the methodology and techniques applied in animal physiology work.

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled and which provided the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the job.
GS-09
Experience: Qualifying experience for the GS-09 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-07 grade level or its non-federal equivalent conducting research in human or exercise physiology; collecting data for report preparation or publications; and operating physiology laboratory equipment.
OR
Education: Successful completion of 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree. Related degrees may include exercise physiology, physical therapy, nutritional sciences, or biochemistry.
OR
A combination of both graduate education and specialized experience as described above.
GS-11
Experience: Qualifying experience for the GS-11 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-09 grade level or its non-federal equivalent conducting research related to human or exercise physiology; analyzing research data and preparing reports of research findings; and operating physiology laboratory equipment.
OR
Education: Successful completion of 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. Related degrees may include exercise physiology, physical therapy, nutritional sciences, or biochemistry.
OR
A combination of both Ph.D. level education and specialized experience as described above.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
