The Health Technician provides clinical and administrative clerical support for the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service (PMRS) section and assists in the daily care to patients (inpatients and outpatients) who are receiving treatment for their physical medicine needs. The position functions under the supervision of the PMRS Supervisor and is located at the Tomah VAMC, Tomah, WI.
Duties
Major duties include but not limited to:
CLINICAL:
Takes and records vital signs prior to examination.
Prepares patients, necessary equipment, and assists in the administration of the following clinical activities: Muscle testing (as needed) Electromyography (as needed) Nerve conduction studies Evoked potential Ambulation assessments Orthotic evaluations Transcutaneous nerve stimulation Amfit orthotics fabrication.
Provides assistance to orthotics clinic, polytrauma clinic, and amputee clinic.
Performs liaison duties with PMRS clinics, inpatient wards, other providers and treatment teams.
UNIT MAINTENANCE:
Obtains and monitors the use of publications, stationary supplies, or maintenance services of office equipment such as copiers.
Monitors supplies for clinical areas and maintains clean, disinfected and sometimes sterilized instrumentation, equipment and work surfaces for the treatment room.
Serves as a resource to the PMRS staff in clinical and Medical Center infection control and patient safety practices.
Provides patient education materials for a multiplicity of medical problems, procedures, and medications.
CLERICAL:
Completes documentation entries into CPRS for templated notes.
Performs a variety of clerical/administrative support, receptionist, record keeping, and miscellaneous duties within the PMRS and the specialty clinic and coordination work.
Schedules appointments and procedures utilizing VA automated patient record system.
Checks records for specific eligibility determinations.
Answers questions regarding policy on cancellations, rescheduling, office hours, or office services.
Answers telephone inquiries regarding questions pertaining to time of patient's appointment, location and phone numbers of doctors,
Handles established requirements for training clerical employees and giving orientation to volunteers, new employees and guests.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 7:00am-3:30pm

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 01/02/2024.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a (GS-05) position you must have served 52 weeks at the (GS-04). The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-04) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Experience taking and recording vital signs; preparing patients and assisting with clinical activities; knowledge of medical terminology; knowledge and ability to schedule patient appointments in a computerized system; skill in communication to appropriately and courteously relate to patients and families regarding their medical condition; experience receiving and triaging phone calls and visitors for the appropriate assistance; providing administrative support for a medical clinic; reviewing medical documentation and records. OR,
Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed a full 4 year course of study leading to a Bachelor's degree, with a major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the Health Tech (OA) position. OR,
Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond post-high school education and experience as described above to meet total qualification requirements for this position? Note: Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (i.e. 30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements: ???????Working with patients requires regular and recurring bending, stretching, occasional transfer techniques, and other similar activities. The work is mostly sedentary and requires some standing, bending and carrying light items such as charts, papers, and books. Occasionally a piece of equipment would need to be moved. A significant amount of walking is also required to interact with patients and other services.
