The Lead Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic serve in the Refrigeration, Heating, Venting and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Section as a Working Leader of three or more employees located in the Lexington VA Medical Center. ***Incumbent must possess and maintain Universal Technician Certification throughout employment. *** A legible copy must be submitted with application.

Duties

Major duties include but not limited to: Exercises extensive control of the work that includes servicing equipment such as checking, troubleshooting, adjusting, modifying and relocating pneumatic, electric and electronic controls, HVAC systems and components, refrigeration systems and components, as well as pump and piping systems necessary to maintain refrigeration/HVAC systems. Ensure and maintain, install, hook up, and put into operation all types of refrigeration and air conditioning equipment and systems, pumps, and piping systems, electric and pneumatic controls. Recognizes faulty equipment, troubleshoots, repairs, modifies and relocates equipment on various special purpose air conditioning and refrigeration systems that require close tolerance in controlling temperatures, humidification, and de-humidification. Work with highly complex systems and equipment to provide specific and critical climate conditions in different locations, such as laboratories, operating rooms, nuclear medicine laboratories and exam rooms, X-Ray rooms and labs, computer rooms, SICU, MICU and CCU areas, morgue coolers, walk in boxes, blood banks, clinics, offices and wards. Works with various types of manufacturers equipment and components or direct expansion, chilled water, hot water, and steam systems, such as air handlers, condensers, high and low velocity air systems, variable air volume systems, package A/C systems, split A/C and refrigeration systems, preheat/reheat and chilled water coils, fan coils, steam humidifiers, converters, pumps, compressors, motors, dampers and damper operators, diffusers, pneumatic and electronic/electric control systems and components. Ensure that air systems are balanced to specification and maintain required tolerances for controlling temperature, humidification and de-humidification. Keeps supervisors informed on problems that come up during the work. Maintains current knowledge and answers questions of fellow workers on procedures, policies, written instructions, and other work related directives. Checks work in progress and when finished confirms that the supervisor's instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines have been met. Other duties as assigned. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The Work Leader's daily duties consist of climbing, working in cramped positions and confined spaces and moving and lifting heavy objects and equipment up to 75 pounds in the repairing and installation of A/C and refrigeration systems. Rigging devices, come-a-longs, hoists, shop cranes, block and tackle are used in the removal of large compressors, coils, motors, air handlers, evaporators and condensers. He/she makes and/or makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms where the parts of systems are frequently in hard to reach places, therefore requiring stooping, stretching, bending and kneeling for long periods of time. The Air Conditioning Equipment Work Leader is frequently required to work outside, on top of tall buildings in all types of weather conditions. He/she is subject to varying temperature changes such as in walk in freezers and refrigerators, machinery rooms and air handlers. He/she is required to work in interstitial spaces which have cramped areas and low overheads. He/she is subject to dust, cuts and bruises, electric shock, bums, falls from ladders or scaffolding, eye, hand and foot injuries and to communicable diseases while working on wards, negative pressure rooms (TB), and laboratories. He/she is subject to oils, greases, solvents, refrigerants and other chemicals in the normal course of duty
