Duties

Operate a variety of heavy equipment on fire lines for the purpose of suppressing wildfires. Operates motor vehicles and machinery in fire suppression situations. Participates in the prevention and/or minor maintenance of equipment and facilities used in firefighting operations. Follows plans and interprets drawings indicating the location of work to be done. Responsible for safety of any assigned crewmembers, and the safe operation of equipment in rough terrain, in accordance with safety rules and regulations, and that equipment is not abused in hazardous work situations. Operator has the knowledge of different sets of controls for the operation of graders and dozers as well as attachments. Using different controls at the same time is frequent and requires good hand, foot, and eye coordination. Performs equipment maintenance and minor repairs for tools, keeping items operational during fire emergencies. Remains constantly alert and operates equipment carefully to avoid damage from rocks and steep grades.

  • This is a Drug Testing Designated Position. You will be required to submit to screening for illegal drug use and pass prior to appointment. This position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.

There is no specific length of training or experience required; however, you must be able to demonstrate through experience shown in the resume materials, that you possess the skill level that has equipped you with the particular job elements to successfully perform the duties of Engineering Equipment Operator without more than normal supervision. Qualifications for the WG-08: I have the ability to perform the most difficult and complex Engineering Equipment Operator (Fire) tasks and I am consulted by other employees regarding performance of the following duties: I am highly skilled in operating engineering equipment such as bulldozers, motor graders, trucks with trailers, tractors, and other heavy mobile equipment; ensuring that needed charts, plans, materials, and tools are available to accomplish daily tasks; and working alongside other employees to set the pace of work; and perform maintenance on equipment to keep in working order. I am considered an expert and work with a high degree of independence -OR- I have the ability to perform the full range of Engineering Equipment Operator (Fire) tasks including operating various engineering and heavy mobile equipment on various worksites such as bulldozers, motor graders, trucks with trailers, tractors, or other heavy equipment; ensuring that needed charts, plans, materials, and tools are available to accomplish daily tasks; and perform maintenance on equipment to keep in working order. I work on my own initiative under general supervision subject to occasional inspection -OR- I have the ability to perform common Engineering Equipment Operator (Fire) tasks including operating various engineering and heavy mobile equipment on various worksites such as bulldozers, motor graders, trucks with trailers, tractors, or other heavy equipment; ensuring that needed charts, plans, materials, and tools are available to accomplish daily tasks; and helping maintain equipment to keep in working order. I work under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed -OR- Selective Placement Factors: This position requires a special qualification that has been determined to be essential to perform the duties and will be used as a screen out element. Those who do not provide evidence they possess the following selective factor(s) will be rated not qualified: Have a current, valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) that is either Class A or Class B Must have Firefighter Type 1 certification or higher This position has a screen-out element: Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement. Physical Demands: Heavy physical effort is used by the operator in constantly reaching, bending, turning, and moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to handle controls to operate the equipment and attachments. Considerable strain is caused by the constant vibration of the equipment and the jerking and jolting from operating on rough surfaces. During fire suppression assignments, the operator is exposed to smoky conditions, fire burns, and other similar conditions. As a line firefighter, the operator is constantly involved in arduous physical activities. The arduous physical examination and work capacity test for firefighters must be met. Work Environment: Work is performed in all types of weather, often in an open driver's seat on hills, slopes, grades, rolling surfaces, and forests. The operator is exposed to injury due to the possibility of the equipment overturning or to the possibility of being overrun by the wildfire. The operator is subject to noise, vibration, dust, dirt, and fumes from the motor and exhaust and to smoke from wildfires.

Education

This position falls under the Job Element standards for the WG-5700 - Transportation/Mobile Equipment Operation Family occupational series.

There is no substitution of education for experience at this grade level.
