Duties

Serves independently as the Leader for heavy equipment operations; informs supervisor of the status of work projects; works with supervisor developing performance standards; performs inspections of crews and equipment, ensuring fire readiness. Provides project work instructions and deadlines; demonstrates proper work methods and setting the pace; requisitions materials and supplies needed for projects and makes emergency purchases when required and authorized. Serves as a role model by supporting Department-wide Drug Free Workplace initiatives; provide counsel to employees on performance and conduct issues; directs and establishes priorities for personnel and equipment. Directs and participates in the prevention and/or minor maintenance of equipment and facilities; ensures the crew prepares and submits fueling records, vehicle reports, safety inspections, and time reports accurately and timely. Acts as the Initial Attack Incident Commander on fires and determines methods and procedures to be used in regard to crew and equipment; follows plans and interprets drawings indicating the location of work to be done. Responsible for proper training of crew, and safe operation of equipment in rough terrain, in accordance with safety rules and regulations, and that equipment is not abused in hazardous work situations. Performs equipment maintenance and minor repairs for tools, keeping items operational during fire emergencies; knowledgeable of fire behavior and accepted practices in firefighting to assess and evaluate critical fire situations.

  • This is a Drug Testing Designated Position. You will be required to submit to screening for illegal drug use and pass prior to appointment. This position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.

There is no specific length of training or experience required; however, you must be able to demonstrate through experience shown in the resume materials, that you possess the skill level that has equipped you with the Ability to Lead or Supervisor and perform the duties of Engineering Equipment Operator Leader. Qualifications for the WL-10: I have the ability to perform the most difficult and complex Engineering Equipment Operator Leader (Fire) tasks, I am consulted by other employees regarding performance of the following duties: relaying instructions received from supervisor to other workers; inspecting the work of others to confirm deadlines and work standards are being met; ensuring that needed charts, plans, materials, and tools are available to accomplish daily tasks; disseminating work to crews to ensure even distribution; working alongside other employees to set the pace of work; operating various engineering and heavy mobile equipment. I am considered an expert and work with a high degree of independence -OR- I have the ability to perform the full range of Engineering Equipment Operator Leader (Fire) tasks including relaying instructions received from supervisor to other workers; ensuring that needed charts, plans, materials, and tools are available to accomplish daily tasks; disseminating work to crews to ensure even distribution; working alongside other employees to set the pace of work; operating various engineering and heavy mobile equipment to various worksites. I work on my own initiative under general supervision subject to occasional inspection -OR- I have the ability to perform common Engineering Equipment Operator Leader (Fire) tasks including disseminating work to crews to ensure even distribution; working alongside other employees to set the pace of work; operating various engineering and heavy mobile equipment. I work under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. Selective Placement Factors: This position requires a special qualification that has been determined to be essential to perform the duties and will be used as a screen out element. Those who do not provide evidence they possess the following selective factor(s) will be rated not qualified: Currently hold the NWCG qualification Dozer Operator - Initial Attack (DZIA) or higher Currently hold the NWCG qualification Heavy Equipment Boss (HEQB) Current, valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Must have at least 90 days of prior wildland firefighting experience 90 Day Prior Wildland Firefighting Experience Requirement (resume must show to and from dates and a description of work performed). The Department of the Interior defines wild land firefighting experience as on-the-line wildland firefighting experience gained through containment, control, suppression, or use of wild land fire. This experience can be met by serving in a temporary, seasonal, or equivalent private sector fire position for no less than 90 days. Periods of wildland firefighting experience, gained through militia and rural fire departments, can also be credited, as long as the total amount of this experience equates to at least 90 days. Wildland fire is defined as any non-structure fire that occurs in the wildland. Two distinct types of wildland fire have been defined and include wildfire and prescribed fire: Prescribed Fire - Planned ignitions. This description includes only fire line experience on a Prescribed Fire; it does not include experience in the planning stages. Prescribed fire experience must be supplemented by fire suppression experience in order to be creditable as previous wildland firefighting experience. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement. Physical Demands: In operating heavy equipment, heavy physical effort is used in constantly reaching, bending, turning, and moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to handles different sets of controls to operate equipment and attachments while the equipment is moving. Some controls are in awkward positions causing strain to the operation in using. Considerable strain in caused by the constant vibration of the equipment and the jerking and jolting on rough terrain. As a line firefighter, the operator is constantly involved in arduous physical activities. The arduous physical examination and work capacity test for firefighters must be met. Work Environment: Work is performed in all types of weather, often on an exposed driver's seat on mountains, steep slopes, graded curves and shoulders, rocky or soft ground, and hilly forests. The operator is exposed to injury due to the possibility of the equipment overturning or dropping of steep slopes. The operator is subject to noise, vibration, dust, dirt, and fumes from the motor and exhaust. During firefighting assignments, the operator is also subject to smoke inhalation and burns. Special safety equipment and safety precautions apply to the work.

This position falls under the Job Element standards for the WG-5700 - Transportation/Mobile Equipment Operation Family occupational series.
