The Telephone Operator works in the Ambulatory Care service at the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center. The incumbent performs work of a telephone operator which encompasses a variety of different duties and responsibilities.
Duties
Specific duties include, but not limited to, the following:
Operates agency telephone system/switchboard to receive and connect incoming and outgoing calls
Answers/places non-routine telephone calls such as fax and international calls
Routes calls to their proper destination
Provides telephone and organization information to callers
Maintains an accurate listing of in-patients as well as roster of staff physicians, residents, interns and students assigned to the medical center
Redirects calls and persons inquiring about lost and Found services to the appropriate destination
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: routing calls, answering/placing calls, paging, and placing announcements on the public address system; performing administrative tasks within computer programs and performs quality assurance audits; triage calls to the best of their knowledge of the department's and/or section's prioritization; provides excellent communication to callers; provides highest quality professionalism and courtesy to callers.

Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have 2 years of education above highschool.

Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond .
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements: The work is usually sedentary but may involve some standing and walking to consult directories and manuals. There are times when one will have to stock incoming supplies such as 20lbs. boxes of copy paper, boxes of patient telephones, and boxes of batteries for various electronic devices around the medical center. This is necessary to help aid in completing daily task.
