About the Position: You will serve as a Safety and Occupational Health Specialist. Conducts management evaluations/inspections in a broad geographical area having over-site of a wide variety of hazardous and complex work operations and conditions found in construction, commercial Architect-Engineer (A-E), maritime, diving, and maintenance operations which employ specialized practices.

Duties

Review construction designs plans and specifications, and contract requirements for safety considerations and regulatory compliance. Review structures in process of construction to assure inclusion of safety features. Confer with construction and design engineers to initiate changes when safety deficiencies are discovered. Applies technology and works with senior leadership to minimize risk and ensure construction safety and occupational health performance is a fundamental measure of business success. Make field determinations and incorporates accident prevention measures to assure availability of personal protective equipment for control of environmental and health hazards. Participate in accident prevention planning conferences with construction management personnel, contractor representatives, insurance company safety engineers, and using agency representatives. Develop and provide technical safety training to supervisors and employees using a wide variety of materials, publications, exhibits, protective devices, and visual aids.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This is a Career Program 12 (CP-12) Position and all ACTEDS requirements apply, to include, as a condition of employment employee must attain CP-12 Level I Certificate within twelve months of hire.
  • Must take defensive driving/accident-avoidance training.
  • Must possess a valid State motor vehicle operator's license for the class of vehicle being operated based on site specific, job related requirements, and must maintain this license.
  • Position may require the incumbent to be under a medical surveillance program as outlined in EM 385-1-1, to ensure adequate hearing and vision capabilities.
  • Incumbent must pass a physical exam within 6 months of appointment to meet hearing and vision requirements with or without assistance devices.
  • Ability to use protective equipment while performing field inspections.
  • This position may require Temporary Duty Travel (TDY) over 25% of the duty time.
  • May be selected at any grade level with non-competitive promotion potential to target grade. Non-competitive promotion potential to the target grade based on time-in-grade requirements and demonstrated ability to perform the higher graded duties.

Education

Basic Education Requirement: This position has an individual occupational requirement (IOR) which must be met in order to qualify for this position.

Possess an undergraduate or graduate degree in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology.

Possess experience in or related to safety and occupational health that provided the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position.
