This position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) the VA GLA HealthCare System (VAGLAHS) in the Engineering department. The primary duties are to install, maintain, fabricate electrical systems, troubleshoot /repair sophisticated laboratory equipment, repair electromechanical and electronic control networks with motors and pneumatics, various types of Allen Bradly RS logic 500 programmable logic controls, solid state components, research equipment throughout the campus.

The primary duties of the Electrician WG-11 are to install, maintain, fabricate electrical systems, troubleshoot /repair sophisticated laboratory equipment, repair electromechanical and electronic control networks with motors and pneumatics, various types of Allen Bradly RS logic 500 programmable logic controls, solid state components, research equipment throughout the campus of GLA VA Medical Center. The incumbent will be expected to receive little or no technical supervision. In the process of verifying the integrity of these controls the incumbent will be called upon to provide direction to other crafts as to the nature of problems found. The incumbent will perform electrical inspections of projects that required consulting from the WG-11 to verify the proper installation of sophisticated research equipment, radiology equipment, commercial kitchen equipment and blood lab equipment.
Additionally, in the interest of efficiency, the incumbent will be called upon to perform major or minor mechanical repairs such as motor replacement of 120V-480V, complex motor starters, rebuilding and re-placement of valves, sensors, solenoids, and other mechanical repairs to expedite the return to service of critical equipment; hence, (e.g. dental vacuum pumps, sewer injections pumps, hot water and steam systems, UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) systems for computer and telephone systems, control systems for radiology power distribution, isolation power systems for operating rooms. The incumbent will research, order and maintain a complete stock of replacement parts to repair all mission critical equipment.
The WG-11 will be the primary electrician assigned to maintain all 208/120 up to 4160/2400 volts generators that provide mission critical emergency power. The incumbent will conduct all emergency generator tests monthly, quarterly and annually required by Joint Commission requirements and NFPA 101/72/110 on all 208/120 up to 4160/2400 volts generators and automatic transfer switches. The WG-11 switches and control systems for 480-4160 volts switch gear, be qualified to work with VFD controls / programming and complex soft motor starters.
The incumbent will communicate with medical personnel, Physicians, Dentist, Radiologist to verify medical equipment malfunctions. Additionally, the WG-11 is expected to perform all duties of a WG-10 Electrician. Foremost, the WG-11 will assist in project design on all electrical installations within the VA campus to assure correct designing and complying with the VA spec requirements and NFPA NEC 72/101 codes.
Incumbent must have skills in maintaining, testing and troubleshooting emergency power systems.

Physical Requirements: The Electrician WG-11 will often be required to work from ladders and scaffolds while using tools and material heavier than twenty pounds. This work will often take place over operating equipment and working personnel, requiring great care. The incumbent will occasionally be required to lift 50 lbs., hold and carry heavy tools and materials. The position requires exceptional manual dexterity requiring work on miniature circuitry in small, hard to reach control cabinets. This position requires walking, standing, bending, sitting, crawling and climbing. Incumbent must have good vision, with or without glasses. This position requires working overtime; consequently, during normal and overtime the working conditions will be in uncontrolled environments, from ladders and rooftops and confined spaces. Occasionally, he/she will be subject to very uncomfortable and possibly dangerous working conditions, exposure to hazards and various types of infections normally encountered in hospitals or other medical facility builds. The incumbent will regularly work with energized conductors ranging up to 120 to 4160volts. The work of this position will take place inside and outside, from heights, confined spaces and be subject to all hazards of the electrical trade. The incumbent will regularly work with energized conductors ranging up to 120 to 480 volts. The incumbent will occasionally work with higher voltages with transformers and switchgear to 4160V.
