About the Position: Office in the General Surgery Clinic section within the hospital setting. Normal hours of work expected. Working with surgeons, APPs (NP/PA), surgery residents, nurses, clinic staff, and corpsmen/medics. Pending qualifications, there may be opportunity to work in the operating room as well as surgical assist. This is a Direct Hire Solicitation

Duties

Provide patient education on treatment/procedure performed and provide follow-up care on patients previously seen in the clinic. Write prescriptions, order the administration of medications, dispense medications and prescribe controlled substances in accordance with approved treatment protocols. Work collaboratively with the physician in patient management evaluation and revision of therapeutic plans. Formulate a treatment plan for acute and chronic problems within the scope of practice. Clinic duties include both outpatient and inpatient clinical encounters. Manage patients covering the full breadth of general surgery, to include digestive tract issues, hernias, bariatrics, colon/breast/endocrine oncologic cases, trauma, and foregut.

Requirements

• This position requires that you obtain and maintain Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
• Immunization screening may be required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
• This is an Inclement Weather Essential position. The incumbent is expected to make every attempt to report for duty on time and/or remain on duty during inclement weather conditions.
• Moderate lifting required: 25 Lbs
• This position is subject to a pre-employment drug testing and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
• This position has been designated “Mission Essential”. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations, the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
• This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
• This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
• This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons.
• This position requires the incumbent to fulfill credentialing requirements and obtain and maintain appropriate/relevant clinical privileges.
• This position requires that you obtain and maintain a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Basic Requirements: Education: Graduation from a physician assistant educational program, accredited by the Accreditation Review Committee on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or its predecessors, at a college, university, or educational institution that is accredited by an accrediting body or organization recognized by the Secretary, U.S. Department of Education. (You must attach a copy of your transcripts to be considered for this position.) Certification: Successful completion of the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) examination. You must maintain status as a certified physician assistant, including completion of all requirements for continuing medical education (CME) and re-certification. (Note: You must provide a copy of your certification in order to be considered for this position.) Licensure: Applicants must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician Assistant from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.(Note: You must provide a copy of your license in order to be considered for this position.) In addition to meeting the basic requirements above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Experience: A minimum of one full year of experience as a certified physician assistant which includes collecting and recording medical histories in automated patient records system(s); conducting physical examinations; prescribing medications; managing patients covering general surgery (i.e., digestive tract issues, hernias, bariatrics, colon/breast/endocrine oncologic cases, trauma, and foregut). This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
