This position is in the Structures Shop, Facilities Management Service of the Edward Hines Jr. Veterans Hospital, Hines IL. The primary purpose of this position is to provide construction, remodel, repair, and maintain items and structures support throughout the Hospital complex.
Duties
The incumbent must perform all types of construction, installation, fabrication and lock work listed below and also other work as assigned:
Framework
Installation of rafters, doors, stairs, finished paneling
Drywall and drywall taping and finishing
Installation of windows, demountable partitions
Interior and exterior trim, trusses, and beams
Concrete pouring and finishing
Installation of siding, PVC wall-covering, high pressure laminate wall-covering
Removes, replaces, and installs carpeting, glue-down , or stretch to include seaming
Fabricates cabinets, kitchen cabinets, plastic laminate topes, shelves, furniture, and other types of cabinetry fabrication.
Removes, prepares, and installs flat roofs and shingles.
Repairs, overhauls. modifies, and installs a variety of locking devices
Reset cords, makes keys, replaces cylinders, rebuild locksets
Change and repairs combinations on safes and vaults.
Performs a variety of installation and repairs such as, filing, drilling, chiseling, and grinding.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 700am-330pm

Physical Requirements: Heavy lifting and carrying 45 lbs. and over; straight pulling, pulling hand over hand, pushing 8 hours; reaching above shoulder; use of fingers, hands and legs; walking, standing, crawling, kneeling, repeated bending, climbing 8 hours; operation of crane, truck, tractor, or motor vehicle; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; ability to distinguish basic colors; hearing aid permitted. The incumbent works at benches and off trestles. This requires considerable standing, stooping and bending. The incumbent also works on scaffolding and ladders that requires work overhead or in stretched, cramped, or awkward positions. Arm movement is considerable when nailing using such tools as handsaws, planers, wrecking bars, etc. It is occasionally necessary for the incumbent to lift and carry heavy items that weighs 45 pounds or more.
Working Conditions: Some work is done in shops where the incumbent is subjected to possible cuts from hand and power tools, danger from flying chips or splinters, etc. and at times from the unpleasant atmosphere of sawdust in the air. Sometimes it is necessary to work outside in cold and inclement weather. The incumbent must also work on high ladders and scaffolding and on top of buildings up to five stories in height. The incumbent is also required to operate and work from a powered man lift at heights up to 100 feet above the ground.
