Duties
This position is in the Structures Shop, Facilities Management Service of the Edward Hines Jr. Veterans Hospital, Hines IL. The primary purpose of this position is to provide construction, remodel, repair, and maintain items and structures support throughout the Hospital complex.
Major Duties:
The incumbent is assigned to the Carpentry Unit, Maintenance and Repair Section.
The incumbent is responsible to construct, remodel, repair and maintain items and structures throughout the hospital complex. The incumbent performs difficult and exacting carpentry work such as fabrication of displays, hanging doors, and the construction or alteration of structures or frameworks including stairways, columns, beams, trusses, rafters, and roofs of the hospital complex.
The incumbent remodels or constructs additions to structures or buildings which include the installation of new or the removal of existing partitions, walls, doors, windows, cabinets, and other attached equipment.
The incumbent constructs frames for pictures, charts and screens.
The incumbent fabricates counter tops, and remodels or constructs cabinets based upon user specification.
The incumbent lays out and installs floor and ceiling tiles, fabricates walls and partitions, installs window units, shades and blinds, and installs office furniture and equipment including blackboards, bulletin boards and furniture shelving.
The incumbent installs door closers and related hardware, and repairs and maintains doors, window units, shades and blinds and office furniture.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 700am to 330pm

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Carpentry workers at this level work in wood shops and at job sites. When working in a shop, carpentry workers stand for extended periods while operating machines such as Bench Planers, saws, and drill presses. The work requires considerable bending, kneeling, and stooping. When at a jobsite, strenuous physical exertion is sometimes required when handling heavy and bulky materials such as sheets of plywood, framing members, and other building and construction materials. Carpentry workers use manual or portable power tools for extended periods in uncomfortable positions. On-site work typically requires bending, stooping, crawling, and climbing on ladders, scaffolding, and rooftops. Workers may lift and move materials up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds),unassisted, and occasionally lift or move heavier items with the assistance of lifting devices or other workers.
Working Conditions: The work is primarily indoors in a shop and/or hospital setting. The incumbent is required to work both indoors and outdoors, sometimes in inclement weather. The incumbent must be able to work in cramped spaces and must be able to regularly climb ladders, work at various heights, climb stairs, walk along distances and stand in a stationary position for prolonged periods. Frequently is required to perform duties which involve bending, stretching, reaching and kneeling. The incumbent may be required to lift equipment weighing up to fifty pounds or heavier with assistance. They are subject to cuts, bruises, and contusions.
