This position is located in The Facility Management Department of the Facility Support Directorate located in the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center in North Chicago Illinois. The purpose of the work is to fabricate, maintain and repair certain structures at the facility.

Duties

Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: Performs a variety of carpentry tasks where fit, accuracy, and spacing are essential and structural soundness or appearance are important. Requires constructing, altering, repairing, or modifying Items made of wood substitutes, e.g., framework, windows, trusses, rafters, etc. Performs all work Involved In the installation of asphalt, rubber, vinyl and/or ceramic floor tile/covering and in the preparation and application of structural and/or glazed floor, ceiling or wall tile. On occasion, may be assigned to repair/replace roof sheeting and/or composition roof shingles or to assist roofer with repair/replacement of built-up roofs. Must be able to accurately estimate quantities of various items/supplies to be ordered periodically to ensure adequate supply of each type of Item on hand and to have the ability to correctly submit purchase Information on orders submitted. Perform other duties assigned. Work Schedule: Monday through Friday; 7:00 a.m.- 3:30 p.m. Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not authorized

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: The work requires considerable standing, climbing, stooping, bending, stretching, kneeling, and working in cramped, awkward positions, full use of arms, hands and legs is required to enable incumbent to accomplish these physical demands. Good arm movement is required to saw, nail, plane, etc. Must be capable of lifting, carrying, and moving heavy loads (weighing up to 50 pounds). Good hearing, corrected with an aid, and good eyesight, corrected with glasses, are required to enable incumbent to perform a satisfactory job. Will be subject to working in varying temperatures between working in poorly ventilated areas or, at times, under in climate outdoor weather conditions. Majority of work will be performed inside buildings, Hazards Include the possibility of cuts from tools, bruises, flying splinters, falling objects, Injury from Improper lifting, and Illness from exposure to weather. Incumbent will also be exposed to dust, toxic fumes (cleaning solvents, mastics, thinners, etc.), foul odors, dampness, asbestos, and the hazards of power machinery used during the performance of dally assignments. May also be subject to falls from ladders/scaffolds during performance of duties. Shops may also be noisy. On occasion, may be required to perform assigned tasks in asbestos-restricted areas. Whenever this occurs, incumbent will be required to be entirely dressed in the proper attire (PPO} before entering the restricted area and to follow established safety measures pertaining to working in such areas.
