The position Is located In the Facility Management Department (FMD) of the Facility Support Directorate located In the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center (FHCC) in North Chicago, Illinois. The James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center Is larger than just a? single facility, but rather a system of facilities throughout Northeastern Illinois which provide medical care and dental services to U.S. Military Veterans, Recruits, Active Duty and eligible beneficiaries.

Duties

This Carpenter position is aligned under the Preventative Maintenance and Repair Shop, Facilities Management Division, at the Captain James A Lovell. The work involves construction, altering, maintaining, and repairing buildings, structures, partitions, panels and other items using wood, wood substitutes, and composite building materials. Major Duties: -Reads, interprets, and works from drawings and blueprints.-Utilizes good carpentry practices, and follows state and federal codes .-Performs wall, floor ceiling construction, lays sub-flooring in an expert fashion, and hangs suspended ceilings or attaches ceiling tile. -Fabricates and installs Formica countertops and installs wall coverings. -Cuts, sands, and plane lumber. -Installs and adjusts storm door checks. -Repairs and inspects fire doors using local checklist. -Performs carpentry tasks such as alterations and/or remodeling which includes removing and installing partitions, additions to buildings, opening of walls for installation of doors and windows, cuts and sets concrete forms. -Cuts lumber to size for ceiling and floor plates, studs, braces headers, framework for doors and windows, including headers and anchors. Work Schedule: Full-time, Monday-Friday, 7 AM-3:30 PM and may be required to be present to provide off-hours support for utility outages, maintenance and projects support, etc.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. Your resume mustdemonstrate the knowledge of wood and wood substitute materials, and construction techniques; ability to interpret complex instructions, sketches, blueprints, and building codes; knowledge of advanced shop mathematics to plan, compute, and lay out complex and exact projects with features such as arcs, tangents, and circles; skill in setting up and operating the full range of industrial woodworking and related machinery such as routers, bands and scroll saws, and drill presses; and ability to perform routine maintenance on machinery. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Requirements: Work is performed in wood shops and at the job sites. When working in a shop, the employee stands for extended periods of time while operating machinery. The work requires considerable bending, kneeling, and stooping. Strenuous physical exertion is sometimes required when handling heavy and bulky materials. The employee may lift and carry items weighing up to 40 pounds. The employee occasionally lift and moves heavier items. Working Conditions: Some work is performed in the shop areas where the employee is exposed to moderate or high noise levels from operating machinery, sawdust in the air, glue fumes and other hazards associated with woodworking. The employee is subject to cuts, bruises, and contusions. The employee may be exposed to weather conditions and hazards of working on or around ladders and scaffolds. The employee may work in confined areas such as crawl spaces and attics which may be dusty and dirty. The employee uses protective clothing and devices.
