This position is in Nutrition and Food Service located at Central Alabama Veterans HealthCare Systems (CAVHCS). Its primary duty is to prepare and serve food to the veterans in the acute, long-term care and outpatient program setting as indicated.
Duties
Food Preparation:
Portions salads, desserts, juices, and other specified food items for service line in accordance with established procedures and 1-IACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) guidelines. Washes fresh fruits and vegetables as assigned by supervisor. Purees food when needed and measures food for diabetics, etc. Stocks tray line with milk cooler and assures that no milk cartons stocked have expired dates. Notifies supervisor immediately if milk has expired dates.
Sanitation:
Fills dish machine, checks temperature gauges and checks for proper functioning of dish machine and records temperatures on temperature log as assigned by supervisor. Cleans dish machine thoroughly after use, according to established policy and communicates any dish machine malfunctioning problems to the supervisor.
Tray Delivery and Pick Up:
Delivers carts without unnecessary delay to designated units and calls patient's name (uses two personal identifiers) before placing tray al bedside to ensure the specified patient is receiving the correct tray. Pulls loaded trucks to the units and serves trays to patient's bedside as well as Dining Halls. Delivers trays to patients eating in dayroom and picks up soiled trays from dayroom. Works with speed and accuracy, observing if all items are on tray.
Work Schedule: Full time. Shifts available 5:00am to 1:30pm and/or 10:00am to 6:30pm; need to be available to work holidays and weekends.

Physical Requirements: Wage Grade 3 Food Service Workers perform work requiring light to moderate physical effort. They may be required to perform heavy work, such as scouring and scrubbing large size cooking utensils and pushing heavy carts and trucks in unloading, storing, and delivering supplies. They are subject to continuous standing and walking, and frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and bending. May be required to work on ladders and use powered cleaning equipment. They frequently lift or move objects weighing up to 20 pounds unassisted and occasionally lift or move objects weighing more than 40 pounds with the assistance of others.
Working Conditions: The work is performed in kitchen areas where the steam and heat from cooking and dishwashing equipment often cause uncomfortably high temperatures and humidity. The work area is well-lighted but usually noisy from food service activities, and there is danger of slipping on floors where food or beverages have been dropped. Food service workers are regularly exposed to hot liquids, sharp cutting blades, hot working surfaces, and extreme temperature changes when entering walk-in refrigeration or freezing units.
