This position is in the Scientific Research (CL-SR) department of the National Gallery of Art. The primary purpose of the Conservation Scientist position is to support the mission of the CL-SR department by applying scientific expertise to analyze and investigate art-related materials, contribute to the development of conservation strategies, and push the boundaries of scientific knowledge in the context of art preservation.

Qualifications

Candidates must meet the Qualification Standards Handbook requirements for the GS-301-12. A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is at least one year of experience, equivalent in responsibility to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service, performing scientific analyses of works of art, using sampling and non-invasive methods. Knowledge and demonstrated skill in the scientific examination and analysis of a broad range of materials used in art conservation, artists’ materials and works of art. 4. Education

Basic Requirements:

1. Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.

   or

2. Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Education must be obtained from an accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Foreign education must be reviewed by an organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
