About the Position: This position is located within Tripler Army Medical Center Directorate of Medicine Department of Dermatology, in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Duties
Prepare and administer prescribed medications, therapy treatments, and immunizations.
Monitor patients and report/record changes in objective signs and subjective symptoms.
Obtain all vital signs (blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respirations, pain level, height, weight, measurement of head circumference, and length).
Instruct patient and family in sound health practices taking into account illness, physical limitations, culture and socioeconomic status.
Prepare and conduct in-service training twice a year.
Label specimen, complete laboratory requests, obtain patient records, retrieve x-ray and laboratory reports, and monitor stock level and expiration dates of available medications/vaccines and replenishing, when required.
Participate in the admission of patients, discharge planning, and transfer procedures.
Perform prescribed treatments within the scope of practice such as sterile dressing application and packing, wound and burn care, bladder catherization, enemas, suture acilities, ear washes, cardiac monitoring, and gastic lavage.

- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
- This position has been designated "Mission Essential".
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 40 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period.
- This position may require incumbent to obtain and maintain Basic Life Support training certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross.
- Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations or pre-existing immunity based on occupational risk, regardless of job series.
- This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.
- Applicants must be able to fulfill credentialing requirements and obtain and maintain appropriate/relevant clinical privileges.

Basic Requirement for a Practical Nurse:
Licensure: A current license to practice as a practical/vocational nurse in a State or territory of the United States or District of Columbia OR must have applied for a license to practice. Applications of candidates possessing a license must be accompanied by a certified or photostatic copy of the license. Non-licensed candidates who have completed their training may be appointed subject to obtaining the required license during the probationary period. Those not licensed must furnish the date on which they applied for a license and the jurisdiction involved. No person appointed pending licensure may be retained beyond the probationary period if licensure has not been attained.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Experience required: One year of nursing experience in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other supervised medical, nursing, or patient care facility that provided a practical knowledge of human body structure and sterile techniques and procedures which includes 1) Measuring patient's vital signs; 2) Administering immunizations or medications via various routes; 3) Screening or updating patient medical records; and 4) Performing routine procedures such as electrocardiograms (EKGs), pulmonary function tests, wound care, audiograms and vision screenings. This definition of nursing experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).
Education
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this grade level, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone - no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
