This position is assigned tot he Grounds & Transportation Unit of the Engineering Service at the CANANDAIGUA VA MEDICAL CENTER, in Canandaigua, NY.
Duties
Duties will include, but may not be limited to the following:
Operates large trucks to transport laundry, food, refuse, and other cargo.
Operate a variety of passenger vehicles, gasoline, diesel or electric powered wheeled vehicles to transport patients to and from appointments and activities
Familiar with all of the equipment being operated and tools/materials used by the Grounds/Transportation Unit
Be alert and safety conscious when operating equipment to avoid injury to patients, staff and/or visitors due to a malfunction or carelessness
May be assigned general labor duties such as pruning and removal of trees, lawn preparation, grading, seeding, and in road repairing and maintenance
Transports patients/residents to and from medical facilities for healthcare services/treatment, includes loading and unloading passenger from wheelchair to vehicle.
Makes minor repairs to vehicles, such as change tires and basic maintenance.
Performs other duties as necessary.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday,7:30AM-3:30PM
DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

Qualifications
This position includes a Selective Placement Factor (skill, knowledge, ability or other worker characteristic basic to - and essential for - satisfactory performance of the job). Selective Placements Factors are a prerequisite to appointment and represent minimum requirements for a position. Applicants who do not meet it are ineligible for further consideration. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Moderate exertion is required in operating, turning, backing and controlling vehicles that carry heavy loads or large numbers of people. The incumbent must be able to perform tasks necessitating heavy physical effort such as maneuvering and pushing loaded laundry carts, lifting supplies and assisting non-ambulant patients. Will be required to do arduous work in the loading and unloading of laundry and supplies. This position requires considerable use of arms and legs while operating vehicles and equipment.
Must be able to perform tasks necessitating heavy physical effort such lifting litters with patients into and out of any wheelchair van. In lifting litters and assisting patients, but be able to lift in excess of 100 pounds. The driver is required to work outside and is exposed to bad weather conditions while loading and unloading patient, laundry and supplies, and performing snow removal duties. Operator drives in all types of traffic and weather and is exposed to serious accidents. Subject to cuts, bruises and sprains, as a result of accidents while driving or when loading and unloading laundry, supplies and performing general duties.
