The primary purpose of the Maintenance and Operations Supervisor is to manage, lead, direct the operation, and exercise technical and administrative supervision of the Maintenance and Operation team at the Dallas Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center

Duties

The primary duties of the Maintenance and Operations Supervisor, revolve around the ability to manage, lead, direct operations, and exercise technical and administrative supervision of the Maintenance and Operation team at the Dallas VA Medical Center Duties include, but may not be limited to the following: Plans on a quarterly (or longer) basis, the overall use of personnel and other resources for the Teams in the Maintenance and Operations Group. Determines resource requirements, materials, and the number of employees and the types of skill necessary to accomplish long range work schedules. Leads and coordinates changes that would modify or deviate overall work schedules or affect work operations controlled by Group/Team supervisors not under their control. Provides information and advice to higher level Engineering Service supervisors, management officials, and executive Leadership on feasibility of work assignments, budget estimates, and workload data to assist in developing or reviewing proposed long-range schedules and work requirements. Assigns and explains work requirements and operating instructions to subordinate supervisors and sets deadlines and establishes the sequence of work operations to be followed. Manages workload by inspecting and evaluating work operations and reviews, completed work, and inspection reports to assure that standards are met. Analyzes work plans developed by subordinate supervisory staff and monitors the status of their work in relation to the overall schedule requirements, including unanticipated or emergency requirements. Maintains balanced workloads by shifting assignments, workers, and other resources to achieve the most effective work operations. Reviews and analyzes work accomplishments, cost, and utilization of subordinates to evaluate work progress, control costs, and anticipate and avoid possible problems by recommending corrective action to superiors. Participates with subordinate supervisors/employees in the development of performance plans. Uses computer programs such as Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture (VISTA), Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe to generate reports and presentations. Uses tools and equipment associated with their source trade, i.e. Carpentry, Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, Boiler and Chiller Plant, etc. Knowledge of materials associated with their source trade, i.e. Carpentry, Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, Boiler and Chiller Plant, etc. Knowledge of materials associated with construction such as roofing and materials used infrequently for special operations such such as de-icing or other unique situations. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: This position requires walking, standing, bending, sitting, crawling and climbing. Incumbent must have good vision, with or without glasses. Shall lift and carry tools, equipment parts and supplies up to 50 pounds while working from, ladders and scaffolding, may occasionally lift and carry items over 50 pounds. Incumbent may work from ladders, scaffolding, and/or hydraulic platforms. This position requires working in uncontrolled environments, in inclement weather conditions, and in confined or uncomfortable spaces. Many work sites are hot, dirty, duty, greasy, poorly lit, cramped and with unpleasant odors. Occasionally is subject to possible dangerous working conditions including exposure to hazards normally encountered in the hospital trades and various types of infections. May be subject to electrical shock and/or electrical burns, cuts, bruises, and strains. Required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment as necessary to accomplish assigned tasks in a safe manner.
