Duties

Operates 165,000 Fantuzzi reach stacker, capable of lifting loads up to 99,000 pounds to a height of 40 feet. Operates crane outdoors, in all weather conditions, under various degrees of visibility. Operates crane to load and unload containers such as milvans from storage stacks, inspection racks, trucks and rail cars. Drives crane over paved and unpaved surfaces. Operates boom cranes and ensures the load does not exceed the crane's lifting capacity. Selects and attaches proper tag lines, cables, slings, chains, to various types of crane equipment for the purpose of lifting, positioning, and moving heavy objects.

Qualifications

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition. The SOE and minimum qualifications for this position is: Ability to do the work of a Crane Operator without more than normal supervision (SOE) such as: Operating a boom crane; repairing or obtaining replacements for badly worn or damaged rigging gear; cutting and assembling crate components to the dimension and shapes indicated on the drawing. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Effort Employee is subject to continuous physical strain from simultaneously manipulating many levers and controls; from lifting and handling heavy objects; from vibrations caused by the container handling equipment; and from jerking and jolting motions caused by the container handler/crane. Work involves continuous climbing, reaching, bending, and twisting of body. Requires lifting, positioning and carrying items up to 50 pounds. May occasionally lift heavier items with assistance. Moderate physical effort is required to make truck-tractor and trailer connections. There is continuous physical activity in reaching, bending, turning, or moving feet and legs to manipulate controls. Working Conditions Equipment is operated outside, during periods of extreme heat and cold, from a cab that may not be enclosed. Employee is subject to noise, dirt, dust, and fumes; and is exposed to danger from moving machinery and the overturning of the container handler/crane. Is required to work on asphalt surfaces. Subject to cut, bruises, strains and burns. Employee is required to wear safety clothing and equipment appropriate for the job such as gloves, coveralls, goggles, masks, hard-hats and safety shoes.
