The primary purpose of this position, CRANE OPERATOR LEADER, WL-5725-11, is to serve as a working leader of six or more employees in accomplishing trades and labor work. The work consists of small, medium and heavy crane operation as well as the towing of various aircraft, semi-truck operation and forklift operation.

Duties

Relay work assignments based on established priorities, schedules, individual skills, and training requirements. Operate boom cranes of 3-80 ton capacity with variable boom lengths at various outside and indoor locations near aircraft or obstructions where maneuverability is restricted, and accuracy is critical. Operate MB-2 (400,000 lbs capacity) or MB-4 (175,000 lbs capacity) aircraft tow tractors in the towing and movement of a variety of fighter and cargo type aircraft. Evaluate the reported circumstances of crash damaged aircraft for the purpose of assembling the types of tools, equipment, and material necessary for recovery operations. Lead and work with employees to assure even flow of work, observe work in progress, and give technical assistance where needed to procedures.

  • May be required to work varied shifts and uncommon tours of duty as assigned by supervisor.
  • Must maintain a state commercial driver's license.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WL-5700 Transportation/Mobile Equipment Operation Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is: Ability To Lead Or Supervise. JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: Operation of Motor Vehicles Work Practices (includes keeping things neat, clean, and in order) Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (related to mobile equipment operation) Ability to Drive Safely (Motor Vehicles) Ability To Operate Safely (Non-Motor Vehicle) Reliability and Dependability as a Crane Operator Leader PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. PHYSICAL EFFORT: Continual control changes to maneuver crane and load around obstructions, requires strenuous physical effort. Operator exerts heavy effort in pushing, pulling, and depressing the various levers, clutches and brakes. Operator is subject to strain caused by vibrations of the crane, and from the jerking and joking motions while lifting and moving loads. May be required to sit for long periods of time and be subjected to continued jolting, jarring, and pushing, and pulling. May be required to lift items weighing up to 25 pounds and over with assistance. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed inside and outside with exposure to weather extremes. May be required to do work in partially and/or totally enclosed cabs. Incumbent is exposed to the possibility of cuts, bruises, and broken bones from falling while climbing to and from the control cab. May come in contact with preservative, compounds, oils, and coatings when handling material. Some work areas may require safety equipment such as eye, ear, foot, and other protective equipment. May be subject to shop fumes and noise. Incumbent will adhere to all safety procedures and utilize prescribed safety equipment at all times. Long periods of driving may be encountered.
