The incumbent is an Electrician within the Maintenance and Repair unit of the Maintenance and Operations Section of the Engineering Service under the supervision of the Maintenance and Repair Supervisor.
Duties
Duties include but not limited to the following:
The primary duties of this position are that of a journeyman electrician. The incumbent is responsible for installation, modification, repair, troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and testing of complex electrical systems, circuits, equipment, appliances, controls, components, lighting fixtures, verticle transportation, and multiple safety and security alarm system.
Performing a variety of functions including: designing (minor), installing, modifying, repairing, maintaining, troubleshooting, testing, loading, and balancing new and existing electrical circuits and associated fixtures, controls and equipment.
Troubleshoots and resolves complex technical problems through the application of logic and sound engineering principles.
Uses a wide range of test equipment, meters, monitoring devices, and special tools to accomplish all work in accordance with the National Electric Code (NEC).
Read, interpret and apply blueprints, wiring diagrams, schematics, operation and maintenance manuals, the National Electric Code (NEC), local codes, building plans, and other engineering drawings as necessary to fabricate, install, operate, troubleshoot and repair complex electrical and electronic equipment.
Trace and locate cause of equipment and control device malfunctions.
Operation and installation of a variety of complete electrical systems and equipment.
Ability to arrange various gauges, sizes, and types of wire, conduit, couplings, fittings, relays, boxes, circuit breakers, and other electrical devices.
Other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; 8:00am to 4:30pm

Physical Requirements: Works from ladders, scaffolding and hydraulic work platforms. Works in portions of the electrical systems requiring attention that are in cramped, dirty and hard-to-reach locations with low lighting. The work involves prolonged crouching and standing and frequent stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and working in exhausting and uncomfortable positions. The incumbent frequently lifts or carries tools, equipment, ladders, scaffolding, parts and supplies weighing up to 20 pounds. Occasionally, the incumbent will be required to lift and carry items over 40 pounds. Because of the possible extreme dangers of the position, the incumbent must be physically and mentally fit to carry out the duties of the position.
Working Conditions: The incumbent is required to work in all types of weather and conditions to maintain and repair the electrical system, its components, and all allied electrical equipment used at the VA Medical Center. During emergency repairs, extremes of bad weather are sometimes present. Many work sites are hot, dirty, noisy, dusty, greasy, poorly lit, and cramped with unpleasant odors. The incumbent will be required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment as necessary to accomplish the tasks in a safe manner. This position is subject to hazardous conditions of the electrical trade, such as electrical shock, burns, and electrocution.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
