Duties
Plans, designs, and develop Public Affairs content, including various public and command information products.
Provides advice and technical assistance in the creation and execution of communication strategies and plans.
Prepare press releases, speeches, news and feature articles, and responses to Congressional or public inquiries on a variety of issues.
Serves as spokesperson on public issues that prompt interest by the news media, either personally or through arranged and monitored interviews with program officials.
Responds to media and public inquiries regarding the organization and/or its operations.
Assists the Chief of Public affairs on all matters pertaining to public information, media relations, community relations and command information, to include social media and emerging technologies.
Ensures all published materials comply with DoD and agency regulations and directives regarding security, accuracy, policy and propriety, and also all requirements of the Privacy Act of 1974.

Qualifications
To qualify for a Public Affairs Specialist your resume and supporting documentation must support:
A. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular competencies to successfully perform the duties of the position and is directly in or related to this position. To qualify at the GS-12 level, applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level or equivalent under other pay systems in the Federal service, military or private sector. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements including time-in-grade (General Schedule (GS) positions only), time-after-competitive appointment, minimum qualifications, and any other regulatory requirements by the cut-off/closing date of the announcement. Creditable specialized experience includes:
- Researching, planning, and implementing public affairs programs.
- Devising, writing, and editing public affairs products like articles, news releases, speeches, and copy for electronic media.
- Developing and maintaining relationships with print, broadcast, and new media outlets.
- Experience with web and social media programs and tools.
- Coordinating community relations events.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Education
Substitution of education may not be used in lieu of specialized experience for this grade level.
